Thrumming sound at slow speeds
Hello all.
Looking for some suggestions on diagnosing a thrumming sound, at low speeds. For example, when I am backing out of my drive way (reverse) or driving forward at 0-20 km/h there is a regular thrumming sound that starts at a slow interval, and increases with speed.
At higher speeds the sound goes away. There is no difference in the sound when turning, in reverse or in if I in LOW. I swapped the wheels front to back - no difference.
The thrum is loud enough to hear, and just barely present as a vibration at the foot pedals.
Could this be the drive shaft center bearing? Other bearing? Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
strange sound on mine was a bit like that but only noticeable at 50 - 60 mph, not above and not below. over last few weeks it got a lot worse.
replaced wheel bearing - old one could barely be turned by hand !.

The thrum for me is definately at low speeds, and sounds rotational. No sound when I am standing still, sound when moving at low speeds.ikonw8

I have had the EPB catching or chaffing at low speeds.
Forwards and backwards. As you speed up it fades away.
Try slow speed with all the windows down and see if you can pinpoint (better) the source.

So, I did some more troubleshooting, for the record.
1. The noise does not change with engine speed.
2. The noise does not appear when the car is stationary.
3. The noise is variable (wub, wub).
4. The frequency of the noise increases with speed and goes away at about 100 km/h
5. The noise does not appear in reverse.
6. The noise does not change in low gear, vs. high gear.
7. The noise is not dependant on transmission gear selection
8. The noise does not change when moving, but in neutral.
9. The noise changes during turns. To the left it becomes steady (no wub, wub). To the right the wub, wub noise level increases.
10. No vertical play in the front wheels detected. Some limited horizontal play in both front weels.
I got under my Landy and inspected the carrier bearing for the rear driveshaft. The rubber suspension material is torn up and there is substantial vertical play in the drive shaft as a result.
New drive shaft ordered! I'll report back once its installed!ikonw8

So, I replaced the prop shaft - completely new, including new center bearing and bush. Pretty straightforward job.
It did not solve the issue I was having,
so, back to front or rear bearings!ikonw8

+1 on the wheel bearings being the culprit. Mine had very similar symptoms when I got it, and while I was convinced it was the front wheel bearing, it turned out to be the back.
