thud thud thud.....'stepped' tyres???

Hi everyone. First post and hoping you can help me with a problem that is driving me crazy. My 06 HSE with 54k has started making a thud, thud, thud noise which increases with speed upto about 30mph then seems to stop or is drowned out by road / wind noise, only to recur when I slow down. Initially I thought I had a lump on a tyre so checked them all and replaced the one that I thought the noise was coming from with the spare.....alas noise was still there! So off to my local dealer who had it on a ramp and advised that the bearings and diff were ok (other thoughts) but pointed out that my rear tyres (scorpions with c.8k miles on them) were 'stepped' and that this was causing the noise. Not having come accross this term before I was a bit sceptical and quizzed him on what causes it....'gentle driving style sir' eh? what does that mean? that I should cane my motor or it will start making funny noises! As it is the dealer has swapped the tyres round on the same axle and tells me that the noise should go in time as the wear evens out.

Anyway, my initial though is that 'stepping' would result in more of a consistent whine that a thud thud thud noise. Do you think I am being fobbed off??

cheers

I would get your 4x4 alignment checked ... i had a small shudder and turned out to be the rear wheels were a long way out .

One reason for this was suggested going over speed bumps quite fast ( which i used to do Embarassed ) ..the ones were you straddle your wheels over not the full size road ones

I doubt your local KF tyre monkey can do it

My P Zeroes were doing this with only 15,000 on them Rolling Eyes
