Timing Belt change - now or wait?

Don't post very often so please be gentle - I also am clueless with regards to cars!!! I drive them Wink

Looking for some advice re timing belt change - we have a Disco 4 which is on 97000 and I understand it is due at 105. In August we will be driving down to northern Italy towing a twin-axle caravan.

Is it worth getting it done early or can I leave it until next service due? Does the long journey and extra load put more strain on it??? Like I side I'm clueless Embarassed Embarassed

Funding is a little tight at the moment so ideally like to wait, but will get it done if the right thing to do

I'm sure it would be fine, I expect they build a tolerance into the schedule:

HOWEVER, I personally don't think it's worth the risk and knackering the engine. I would get it done before then you can just enjoy your holiday.

Hang on, are they not due at 117,000 miles not 105,000 or 7 years (which ever comes first)

I think you're right - is D3 due at 105 from what I can find online

I'm obsessive about maintenance, but I would change belts etc & fit a new oil pump before leaving.

Thanks for info all

Based on 112k interval - I feel happy enough leaving it until it's next service - which will be at 7-years and around that mileage

Mmm, I'm a big believer in Sod's Law. For peace of mind I'd get it done before. Thumbs Up

As am I - but where do I stop!

When we get back from Italy we will just have gone over 100K - I'm as comfortable as I can be that that is within tolerance

For how long will you keep the car?

If it's less than another 112k or 7 years you might as well do it now and have peace of mind, & the benefit of higher oil pressure for the rest of the time that you own the car.

Likely to be for a minimum of 4 years

I can certainly see the argument for getting it done now - I'd just really struggle with cost right now as said caravan is a new purchase and my car (as opposed to this the family car) is in garage today having its cambelt changed plus a load of other stuff to keep it running Big Cry

BorisBarKeep...

Where are you in Northants?

If you are across towards me, I'd strongly suggest you drop in to speak to Mickey at Loughran Brothers (opposite Tesco) - there's not a lot they can't sort on a Land Rover and their rates should be somewhat lower than a Main Dealer.

We've dealt with them for 25 years plus and can't fault them - doesn't really answer your question but (personally), I'd be tempted to get a price from them and contemplate getting it done before you head off to Italy... If things are that tight, you could always look at taking out a 0% credit card just for this work and then clearing the balance over the life of the deal, then you'd have the peace of mind to know the belts had been done and the luxury of spreading the costs...

Hope this helps!!
