timing belts

Having just replaced timing belts on my new disco i thought i would give my results if it will help others.

rear belt is easy, remove plastic 't' from wiring at back of pump and the wiring will move far enough back to do the belt change without removing anything else other than cover.

local dealer reacons they dont change the idler pulleys on front belt. for the sake of £15 each they are worth having changed as the ones on mine would not have lasted another 105k. i wonder how many high milers are living on borrowed time because of these idlers.

I also changed the steering wheel for the new type. sooo much better. the only faf is unhooking the airbag but a small hook from my disheveled tool kit got the job done.

Hope this helps

Gav

Gav,

Do the idler pulleys have a bearing inside?

Cheers,
John

Yes they are basically big bearings that the belt runs around. Whenever i change timing belts i always change idler or guides as sometimes called.

Gav,
I have just had the high pressure fuel pump replaced with belt as a recall. How do you access the pump etc, 'cos even using a mirror on a stick,I cannot see the thing, unless I am looking in the wrong place.?

Regards, Barry.

Hi Barry

The high pressure pump is located at the back of the engine set low in the v. as you look from the front the belt runs to the right hand (n/s) head. It is not easy to see but if you remove the engine cover you can just see the cover through a gap in the pipes and brackets.

Being new to this LR world, when is the timing belt changed? I will take your advise and ask for all of the pulleys to be changed at the same time. I cueently have 26,000 miles in just over two years.

Baz, ignore them, they're assuming you've got a TDV6 Rolling Eyes Your profile shows a V8 in which case it's 150k miles or 10 years.
Item 28 on the check sheet here though it's 75k for arduous use

The 4.4l V8 doesn't have a Timing Belt - it uses a chain.

It's the ancillary drive belt ('fan' belt) that's changed every 105k miles or 10 years on those ...

Hi guys.

I've just clicked through 100K and am starting to get paranoid about the timing belt... Does anyone have an idea of dealer charges to do the change?

Cheers,
Christoff Thumbs Up
