Thankfully I was about 30 seconds from home when it started…

Easiest possibilty is a stone caught behind the parking brake backplate.
It depends if you can identify the direction it is coming from. A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an MG5 EV

Good shout. Would that cause a vibration too…like driving over cobbles? I neglected to mention that bit. It did seem like it was coming from in front of me too…

Then no, bearing failure in the front hub would be my next option. The “cobbles” is quite distinctive.
Stone in the backplate can sound like the car is tearing apart but no vibration and often little damage. A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an MG5 EV

After having another listen I’m pretty sure it’s coming from the back. Going to see if I can get it on a ramp tomorrow for closer inspection.

prop shaft bearing maybe ?
seems to be a fairly common failure, the vibrations would resonate throughout the whole car most likely and give a rough ride feeling 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

I’m suspecting the prop shaft too, I fitted a new prop shaft around 3 weeks ago, I’m wondering if it has failed??? Didn’t get a chance to check it out yesterday but I’ll see if I can get underneath it tonight.

Glad someone is considering a new part has failed.
"it can't be that, I have just replaced it" is dangerous fault finding. A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an MG5 EV

It may be my own fault, I opted for a £200 one over the genuine one which was over £400…it could have been the installer like (me) but it has ran perfectly for a good few hundred miles since I fitted it.

The prop shaft itself appears to be fine, there is little to no play and the rubber doesn’t look damaged, however, it has spat gunk all over the heat shield. I’m pretty sure that we didn’t apply all this during fitting. Could it be a sign of failure?

When my lad bought his D3 there was an invoice for a replaced prop centre bearing.
Looking underneath there was grease on the heat shield like yours - when split and replaced the cap hadn't been sealed fully
We replaced it with a new GKN one straight away. I see no ships........
