Mac, I think you miss the point. None of us are so stupid as to fail to recognise the true cost of running a car.
It has nothing to do with being able to afford it, just a choice about whether to subsidise the company or retain purely as a private toy.
I thought the thread was more about the punitive taxation policy than ability to afford the car. Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

I agree, my D3 is a hobby...................I dont smoke or drink, work hard and enjoy life as its too short to worry about, My pavement ornament is there when I choose to use it, but can't as I work Mon-Fri in the truck.
If it needs fuel its cos its empty, then it gets brimmed..........Never bothered to think about it further.

Well I use it all weekend, and leave it with swmbo during the week some of the time......Like I said I am a tramper in a LGV during the week.......
But what I have saved is now being wasted on slinging her in a container for shipment to the USA

talk about the dummies oot the pram..........
I have a shell card to pay for business miles and as is custom and practice to claim + or - 10 % in miles which some folks obviously balance in their favour. On top of that you can reclaim up to 40 p in the mile tax relief (1st 10K Miles 25p >10k) if your employer does not pay 40 pence per mile in your milage allowance. My company pay approx 15 pence per mile but since I have the shell card I pay them 15p per mile for private milage.
do peeps on here know that you get tax relief for business milage in own cars....???????
works out I only pay about £500 per year for private fuel.
I think I would have to rethink my "company car model" if it didnt work out for me.......
In fact the plan is as my car is 4 years old and has to come out of co car plan in 1 year, that it will also be on the drive only for weekend and caravan work after that

A good post outlining the iniquities of the taxation system turned into diatribe
It's hard to earn and easy to spend. We all make our decisions based on our circumstances, and this economic climate has probably changed most peoples situation so tough, real life decisions have to be made.
