Today, my D3 officially retired....
No longer will my D3 be used as my working vehicle. I finished the last of our roadshows for the year today, and unloaded all the kit for the last time this evening.
Its just too expensive to run, when I can only claim 25p per mile back before getting shafted even more by the tax man.
It has been really nice to have done so many miles in such a capable car. Next time the business needs kit shifting around the country, we shall be hiring a van.
My business miles will now be done in my Punto for the next few months, and will be looking at a Polo Bluemotion in the summer to replace the Punto.
D3 is staying with me however, to be a family / dog transporter, caravan puller, and general nice car to have on the drive.

That's why we chopped SWMBO's D3, it was too nice a car to just sit on the drive! Sell it now before the Market comes to its senses, pull the tintent in the winter with the Polo!

Know exactly what you mean Gareth, I also do high miles and it's getting very expensive.
Filled up on Mon £107, filled up on Tuesday £102 ....ouch !!
And as you, I can only claim back 25p per mile.
That must be the same rate going back for at least 10years.
So why Mr Taxman, no increase!!!

Derek, having 2 D3's was just excessive!
Ron, your right it is 10 years since the fixed price car scheme was forced upon us. Remember the good old days when we had to do over 18k to get the tax break? and you could claim the true cost of running back.
The current scheme of 40p for 10k and 25p for the rest has actually insulated our business from just about all cost increases dues to rising fuel prices for the last 10 years. This is one reason the government won't change it. Especially when you can get a car like a Bluemotion which will do well over 70mpg if driven carefully. I know its not glamorous, but when you have not given a pay rise for two years, you can't afford to be.

i'd do the same,, but i dont think a polo would get through the woods,,, or pull a chipper,,, in fact dont think the winch would fit either,,
it's getting silly now,, esp with the amount of petrol going through the saws as well,,,one wife.......livid

Look at a Renault Megane Estate Auto Eco, the benefit in kind is stupidly low.

I'm on 16p per mile from my work.....
I Love the D3... get OK MPG (35ish)...but still makes me smart when it takes £110 to fill it up....
I keep thinking about selling it and getting a wee runaround thing that does a gizillon to the gallon..... and costs peanuts to fix or tax (thank gawd I'm old or I would moan about the insurance as well!)
I still have my 110CSW - cheap to run (on veg oil) and easy to work on.... but not as refined as the D3
what to do...what to do....

stop it stop it stop it!!!!! mine costs me a fortune, guzzles fuel like f**k, sits on the drive most of the time (while I bounce around the country on crappy trains with work because mileage rate is cr*p), and it rarely gets to see any mud anymore BUT its the best effin' car I've ever owned and I'm hanging on (for now)Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

It's cheaper than diesel and you can convert it to methane.
