| Tolls in Austria, do I need a Go-Box? |

Having driven through Austria last August, the only toll I came across was at the Brenner pass when I left Italy. I drove along the A13 motorway turning left at Innsbruck and continued to our site in the North West of the country. We continued into Germany the next day. I have since heard that any vehicles over 3.5t should carry a Go-Box which logs motorway miles and charges accordingly. Did I just get away with it or didn't I need one. I didn't have a vignette either which I must also have completely missed. Can someone enlighten me?
I have a D4 and tow a tintent weighing in at 1900kg.

Sounds like you got away with it.
A vignette is mandatory as soon as you enter Austria. There are additional tolls on some motorway sections, mostly the alpine passes.
With a D4 you don't need a GO box, even towing a caravan.

Oooops!
I saw nothing that explained as such on my way into Austria. It was only as I read another forum post that I realised the person started talking about vignettes etc I thought "hang on!".
Phew, a bit lucky then by the sound of it.

Vignettes are sold in every Petrol Station near the borders and they are cheap and last 12 Months. You need a GO BOX if you are commercial or Campervan/Commercial over 3500KG "Only if you use the motorways".

You can also buy the Austrian vignettes for shorter periods i.e. 4, 7, 10 days etc Mark

You must display a Motorway Vignette on the inside of the windshield of your vehicle as you enter Austria. Failure to have one will mean a heavy, on-the-spot fine. Stickers can be obtained from the Austrian Automobile Clubs as well as post offices, newsagents and petrol stations. You can also purchase stickers in Austria's neighboring countries at petrol stations, borders and Automobile Clubs. Cars rented in neighboring countries may or may not be equipped with the sticker.
Toll Sticker Prices 2014:
A twelve-month sticker for private cars and motorhomes up to 3.5t is EURO 82.70 and for motorcycles EURO 32.90
A two-month sticker for private cars and motorhomes up to 3.5t is EURO 24.80 and for motorcycles EURO 12.40
A 10-day sticker for private cars and motorhomes up to 3.5t is EURO 8.50 and for motorcycles EURO 4.90
Vehicles exeeding 3,5 t
The toll tariff system based on emission categories concerns all motor vehicles with a maximum permissible gross weight exceeding 3.5t and applies on all Austrian motorways and expressways. These vehicles are required to attach a small adjustment - named the GO-Box - to their windscreen. Note that this includes larger private vehicles such as motor caravans that are above the weight limit. If your motor vehicle is close to the weight limit you are advised to carry documentation confirming the maximum permitted laden weight. If your registration documents do not clearly state this, you'll need to produce alternative certification e.g. from a weigh-bridge.Headlights
Driving with your lights on is optional during daylight hours and compulsory at night. You will be stopped by the police and possibly fined if you do not comply with this.

Just spotted that, only a years ticket also so 66 euros to visit Switzerland before anything else. I met a guy last year who said the border guards came out with a tape measure, rubbing their hands together when he turned up with his twin axle caravan. Maybe just scaremongering. No not scaremongering they do do that, you need one for the van and one for the towing vehicle but at 66 euros they have not gone up much since I went 5 years ago. They don't encourage caravans in Swtzerland, most sites only accommodate 6/7 vans, as for their "A" roads they about are equal to our "C" roads. It can when others can't,

ISTR the vignette isn't needed if you don't use the motorways, for example popping in on a normal road to tick Switzerland or Austria off your country list. Not much good for transiting through though. But if you're being hassled at a non Mway crossing to buy one you don't have to.
Unless things have changed.

Just over £50 isn't beyond my scope to visit what looks to be a stunning country.
My summer was spent touring France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium and was totally blown away with how straightforward it all was. Trying to persuade the wife to have 5 weeks next year. Just loved it. I found the people everywhere were so hospitable and friendly. Once we got to Provence the GB stickers seemed to vanish and we saw very few until we got back up to mid Germany.
More of us should do it, although maybe understand the vignette requirement first.  FFRR 2017 4.4SDV8 Autobiography. Cost so much I must be mad!

We also found it very easy, relaxed and amazed at the distance that could be covered travelling at a steady 60ish mph. We found an excellent site at Lausanne on the banks of Lake Geneva, stayed for two weeks I can't recommend it enough It can when others can't,
