There are a few simple things you can check first:
*Ensure that you tyre pressures are correct.
*Clean you MAF Sensor. A simple job that will take 15 minutes.
*Make sure that you car is serviced and that the air filter is clean.
*Have you A/C serviced and regassed.
*Don't use supermarket fuel. Use something like Shell diesel.
Just a few suggestions, but I'm sure that someone else will be along shortly with some more tips.

Re-set the 'trip' mpg/computer if you haven't. See if that makes a difference.

As said above, check the brake system to ensure that nothing is binding. You should be getting 24-32 depending on how you drive (real mpg, not from the display)Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE and 2013 MY D4 HSE
Previously:
TD5 Defender 110 CSW (230k miles)
300TDi Disco 1 (289k)

110 V8 CSW (220k)
S3 109 hi cap pickup (ex RN)

Assuming a £1 per litre, that gives 6.75 gallons so 16.3 mpg you are not wrong.==================================

Glow plgs are (as far as I know) only for starting but the FBH (fuel burning heater) helps get the engine up to temperature quicker. So is yours working?
