Changing detent circlip disco 3.

car is manual disc 3, I've read everything on replacing detent circlip, very good information. Gear lever is becoming loose and few weeks ago it baulked attempting reverse. Purchased new detent circlip and decided yesterday to attack it. Removing offside front wheel, could hardly see the plug but could reach it arm full stretch. Located 14mm plug key but no chance of getting socket on it as there is a heat plate etc on body. Wheel back on, up on ramps in off road height and I could see plug above pipes, again socket fouled and wouldn't go on plug key. Tried a ratchet spanner which was better but not long enough to get any purchase, doubled up leverage with ring spanner but nearly damaged the pipes below it. I'm wondering if I'm not using correct tools or there is a easy way to remove plug. Weather has stopped play today but any comments would be appreciated? Many thanks jbd

Thanks for reply. Yes it was this information I was using but I can't gain access by front wheel. I'll have another go when I compose myself!
