D4 remote access to wheel winch, cars built after jan 2013

Sorry should have put this in D4 General. I intended to!

Thought this may be of interest to others who need remote access to their spare wheel winch without turfing everything out of the rear of the car.

I have placed some pics in my gallery to show how it was done.

I used a fork (or jaw) bottlescrew(stainless), available from boating shops. You need at least an M8 or an M10. I used an M10 from the local crane supplies people in Sydney (Nobles).
You only need one end, bear in mind that one end will be a reverse thread.
Also required a stainless steel nut if not supplied with the bottlescrew.
Need a socket that fits the nut and an adapter that fits the socket so probably 1/2" to 1/4" and then a short socket extension dependent on what will be above it.
I used the M10 fork and 2 x m10 washers + a piece of brake hose around the pin in the fork.
The nut is screwed down almost to the yoke of the fork, and 1 then cut off the remaining thread above the nut.

My local exhaust specialist is very obliging, he welded the nut to the remaining thread on the fork.

This gets us back to what we had before someone at Land Rover had a brain explosion and tried to redesign the wheel.

Its important to measure all the heights very carefully it only just fits.
If you use an M8 it probably will not require any more modification. Just a suitable size piece of hose to stop it rattling which fits over the pin through the hole in the winch.

If you go for the M10 you will probably need to shave some off the bottom of the fork and the washers, as I did. With the M10 the washers and the brake hose over the pin it is a very snug fit.

Its very fiddly to work out the lengths.

Would very strongly suggest when assembling it that you tie a piece of cotton or whipping twine onto the split ring and the thru the little hole in the pin.
You could end up having to drop the winch out as those fiddly bits disapear very easily. Happened to me and I have small hands!

I had help from the exhaust guy, and from my ex dental technician, and am now retired so had plenty of time to work things out.

We have used it and it works fine feels very secure.
Hope this helps those who carry a lot of gear in the car.

Julia,

Did you try one of the balustrade wire forks (which are thinner and round), and have it full length, rather than cutting it off? My thinking, now that you've come up with that idea, is this would be a complete system, and dispense with the other adapter, or if someone wants, then you can use the existing winder, but higher up, is they use another fork as the other end. Things can be locked off with Loctite.

Because there is a traitor in our midst feeding back to the designers how the users are getting around their crass incompetence and they don't like us being cleverer than they are.

As revenge, the next version will include a torque shear section that will prevent overtightening of the winch by causing the head to shear off.

Hi phl,
Seems like a good idea. Not having any balustrading at home, it did not even occur to me. I don't think the the bottlescrew that I Used would work tho' the body of it was really chunky, but then it did come from the crane suppliers in sydney. I think the m8 size from the boating shop probably will fit. Will have to wait till I return to sydney in 3 weeks and try it.
Currently idling at Dubai airport twiddling fingers and trying to stay awake.

This modification has obviously had a good test by now; has anyone experienced muck and water getting through from below, which the large rubber grommet is supposed to prevent, or is this simply solved by piercing a hole through the grommet to feed the extension bar through?

Re waterproofing wheel winch remote access

Hi,
Would definitely recommend using the rubber grommet.
Travelling dry dusty unsealed roads will allow fine dust into the rear as I found when I first used the original technique with the D3, bear in mind that the two floor skins are not quite parallel and the hole is therefore not quite in the centre of the grommet. (Grommets are only a couple of quid I was amazed to find when I was in the UK a couple of months ago)
As far as waterproofing goes I have copied the excellent technique described with photos on the Aulro forum (australian land rover owners) by CaverD3, can be found in the thread at:-

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/105413...anism.html

I had difficulty getting the right diameter draught excluder, I think 25mm might be the closest, I imagine this might be readily available in B&Q. Unfortunately I would have had to buy 50 meters, so I opted for two lengths of a smaller diameter, cut them and glued to an O ring shape. Placed one on top of the other between the two skins and squirted some waterproof caulking material from the boat shop all over it. Used a newspaper with a hole in it to prevent too much mess.

A messy business, but looks pretty effective, haven't tried it in water that deep, but I reckon it will be OK. I suspect to be sure it would also be worth squirting the caulking goo on the draught excluder from outside the car as well, after dropping the spare wheel.

Thanks for the info Julia - appreciated; I'll register with AULRO so I can see their photos. The drawer info may also be useful! Thumbs Up
