I think a wobbly stepladder is potentially going to do a lot more harm than someone standing on the top of the tyre, as has already been pointed out, the weight on the tyres already far exceeds that of a person.

If you drop it to access height you'll probably find un-cleaned bits on the roof that they couldn't reach.

Personally, I usually put it in off-road height so they can give a good flushing under the wheel arches.

I take mine to a "hand wash" in Exeter run by a group of Poles. I raise it to the highest elevation to make it easier for them to get to the roof - bigger gap to get their feet in. I haven't noticed any damage (yet). At least they're getting up there and cleaning the roof.

Shocked Why worry. These wheels are designed to take over a 1000kg on each corner.

I have an expo rack on mine and stand on the wheels several times a week to access stuff off it. i have done so for 9 years without any issues.

Sorry, but I think you're being a bit 'precious'.

I dont have any problems with people standing on the tyres.

What I don't like about those places is the way they get a sponge, use it to clean all the dirt off the cars they get through there then swill it out in the same bucket filled with grit and dirt.

If I don't have time to do it myself then I get a local detailer to come do it, a quick wash over by them is £35 and I'd rather pay the money and not end up with swirls in the paintwork.

Bramble rash and battle scars I can live with, but swirls from grit coated sponges drive me mad.

Always lower my Disco to access height for the Poles to reach the roof and bonnet. What I watch out for is certain individuals wear jackets that have zips and this scratches the paint work. They normally stand on the rear bumper and side steps.

You can't get your foot in far enough to balance properly Rolling with laughter

Good point - thanks! Smile

The only problem this will make is they won't clean under your arches now

So looks like you are stuck one way or another

I've never understood why anyone with a 4x4 would want to clean it all the time, it'll get dirty soon enough.

What kind of damage could they possibly do by standing on the tires?

I always stand on my rear wheels to clean the roof, and the front door sills to reach to the middle of the windscreen, it's a 4x4, so can't for the life of me see that would cause any damage.

My D3 has clocked over 258k now and is used off road regularly, and is nearly always fully loaded as part of my business, that's what it's designed for, to work for it's living Thumbs Up

Drivers who want to wrap their car in cotton wool should buy a Saloon car, then the car wash guys can wash the roof easily Rolling Eyes
Never get mad - get even !!

06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k

previous vehicles:

52 X-Trail 2.2 SVE
various euro boxes !

I asked because I was concerned on two counts. Firstly I wondered if the weight of people on the wheels might apply pressure in a completely non standard manner to the suspension and so possibly cause damage because it is not designed to take a force in the direction of said climbers. My other concern is that they may damage parts of the vehicle and bodywork during their ascents and descents.

The consensus appears to be that it is OK though.

As to cleaning it, one day I will want to sell my D3, so I am sure that cleaning it every 4 - 8 weeks helps keep its value.

Personally..

I wouldn't let them do this for the following reasons:

1) its unsafe...you can only stand properly on the top of the rear wheel....it easy to slip off.....hard lesson I learnt
2) when someone does fall off body work damage could happen...this costs you
3) it wouldn't be impossible for the person foot to get trapped & a nasty accident happen....I wouldn't want this
4) the first step up is pretty high...they could use the wheel spokes as a first step...more cost to you

I wouldn't have thought it would or could be detrimental to the suspension

make them use a set of steps..the car wash I use has one just for this purpose
 BREXIT - done properly.
