I seem to recall from the depths of my memory that it is bad engineering practise to re-use tow bar bolts and they should always be replaced by new ones. Is this still the case? never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly

PKO, mine never got "used", fitted yes, but never towed on as I took the drop plate straight off.

hi, al cope, the reason I queried it is that mine is going in on Friday, & I have towed with it. I was concerned by Nicks comments that he was having problems sourcing new ones, and if it is the case that they shouldn't be re-used, I don't want my dealer re-using them. To be forwarned.... as they say. never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly

I see your car has not got the drop plate on either I don't suppose you have the tapered bolts ?
Nick
Nick, yes - I have them. Just stick the new plate in the car; I'll fit it. I only took the plate off after a "little bird" flagged the potential issue. Contains sulphites

ah I'd say you'd seen the one on ebay that is missing the stabiliser bars I'm not interested in it but wondered the same although I'd guess it would not be safe without them. Zambezi Silver TDV6 HSE, Privacy glass, Side steps and Maxxraxx 5 Bike carrier.

The "Monstropolis" had her first service last week and dealer flagged up the multiheight tow bar issue Q003. As she is not fitted with the 6 hole plate in question, the dealer booked it in for today and asked if I could bring in the plate too, (which i put in the boot). Dropped her of at dealer today at 9am and picked up at 5, no different except I now have 2 drop plates (1 old and 1 new) in the boot!
Just bizarre!!

The dealer should have kept the old one as under warranty conditions they may have to return as proof of doing the job or retain till asked by land rover to scrap the unit... You want it for how much !!!!!

Hi everyone,
Picked up my new XS Commercial last week as replacement for my '97 Disco 1 Commercial. I had a ball & pin towbar fitted by the dealer but towing height is max 300mm on the pin. Trouble is I tow off road (farm tracks/fields and the like) and I am looking for something more like 500mm to avoid tearing off the jockey wheel.
Also I'm conscious of how low the whole towbar assembly is....don't know if I'll be charging farmers for ploughing or paying compensation for damage?
Any suggestions on a fix or alternatives?

On page 6 of the fitting instructions it shows pin fittings at 350, 400, 450 and 500 mm, but it also says 400mm not be used with Pin and jaw and the additional plate isn't to be used with them, leaving just the 450 setting
Have finally fitted mine - cheers Nick DS3 TDV6 HSE

I don't have the multi-height plate so I just have the setting as installed by the dealer. But it is nowhere near 450mm. A ball might be near 450 on the same fixing because of it's shape but the pin is in-line with the fixing bolts so it rides lower.
