My new Disco 3. Autobox decision! |
|
Hi, pretty new to a Disco 3, in fact only 8 days! I have sorted the leaky sunroof and now want to make a decision on what do do with the autobox. It seems to be doing a bit of rev fluctuation and a surging noise and a tiny vibration sometimes, from what I can see on the forum I could do with a mega flush. But do you think I could get away with spending £180 on a new sump and oil and do this myself as it is a fair bit cheaper than a flush!!
Your thoughts are very welcome!

All seems a bit rash you doing all this work on a car you only bought 8 days ago ?? Presumably a private deal or at least you knew there would be work to do and did the deal at the right price
In respect of the GBox oil - a flush is the only real way of getting it done. If you simply do an oil change, you will leave 50% of the old oil in the galleries thus not really achieving what you need.
EDIT: Didn't see you intend a new sump - as long as you can get the galleries clear, may well work OK.
You don't say how many miles on the car - if more (I suspect it will be) than 70K, you would do well to add a tube of Dr Tranny (about £10) which will help the Torque Converter lock-up and reduce the tendency for rev fluctuation.
Plenty of info on here about it.

I agree flush is the sensible route and add a Dr Tranny to the end result.
Around 6 or 7 litres of oil will stay in the torque converter, oil cooler and pipes even after dropping the sump off, you will need to change the oil several times to get the benefit of new oil in your box if not going the flush route. Paul Redding

By the time you've had it in bits to get the sump off and then basically only diluted the fluid 50% a flush won't seem that much more given that it changes 95% + of the fluid. You know then you'll be done for another 60K miles IID PRO

I would go for a megaflush.
I flushed mine myself on the D3 a couple of times. you will need about 3 times the amount of oil to give it a decent flush, and even then you will still have the old oil mixed in with the new. the cost of all that extra oil pays for the megaflush Duncan

Well, I am all booked in for a megaflush by 4-tec at the end of the month. Let's hope it is money well spent!

Had mine done by Gordon @ 4-Tech some 3 years ago now - 20K later (with considerable caravan work), all still OK.
Don't forget the Dr. Tranny though - you'll still need it for the TC slippage.

Wow wow wow wow wow!!!!!! What a difference the flush made, no surging, no juddering on hills and the whole driving experience is so much better!!!!!!! I had the Platinum treatment with the friction modifier and I would seriously recommend having this done if you have these problems with your autobox! Cheers Gordon!
