My first dent from off roading - Sadness or Badge of Honor?
Out wheeling yesterday at a club member's home where he's got a "jungle trail" in his back yard, nothing epic, just a cool little trail with trees and a sharp left up hill, then a quick right, quick left combo.
I went through the trail about 4 times then on the 5th attempt later in the day the Disco 3 slides into a tree on the rear right quarter by the gas filler. I can't move forward on my own, and if I get winched straight forward the tree scrapes the entire panel. Solution: winch from the side of the truck secured to my Rover Specialties rock sliders with a tree strap. A fellow member (Dr. Rik) with a Dicso I was more than happy to provide said winching services.
See pics below.
Here's the situation:
I slid sideways into this tree and can't go forward on my own. Lots of loose black dirt, tread on tires packed with dirt. Want to keep damage to minimum.
The solution: Winch from the side to pull me away from the tree. Used a strap and attached to my Rover Specialties rock sliders.
My first dent from off roading. And... it just happens to be my birthday.
"It's merely a flesh wound!"
So, there you have it. I'm kind of bummed that I dented my truck, but not bummed about having a dent in my truck from a tree.
Now I'm thinking of tree sliders for the rear quarter panels. I've seen them on Defenders, why not Disco 3's? Does anyone know if it's been done before? 1998 Discovery LSE - Gold, 249,000+ miles, completely stock

Ouch!!!,it's not too bad buddy The only tree sliders I've seen are welded to a steel rear bumper ie a Kaymar product or home made unit.Steve

Badge of honour You should see the side of my D3 It's full of deep scratches from trees etc. In your situation I don't see how any type of slider would of helped.
Cheers

I have done the same thing but not in a 4WD.
I can suggest two possible solutions DiscoNels.
1. Yes, fit tree sliders and hope that you don't crush the bar against the bodywork in a repeat of the first occurrence
2. Try to aim high on cambered tracks so that the sliding might be to a path less than a scraping against small trees, etc.
Oh, and how come your vehicle doesn't have the letters LR3 where it currently has Discovery 3? Is it an import from another LHD market? (Edit: Just saw your gallery and the notes about changing the lettering over; so therefore disregard both questions.)

* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)
