Great updates as usual Darren Thumbs Up

Quick question, I now have a lazy tailgate after fitting my ladder, what struts did you use, were they heavier duty ones?

Thanks Smile

The strut was a standard one bought from Advanced Factors and is rated at 480n. I know others have talked about fitting uprated ones but I reasoned that after 8 or 9 years the originals were probably just a bit tired, so new standard ones would probably work.

It really needs two new ones to get the full benefit, but the difference with just one leads me to believe it was a good choice.

Towing Electrics Cover

Another little task that I completed recently, inspired by a post here, was to add some lugs to the towing electrics cover retaining clips. This means that they can be twisted easily by hand to release them. The inspiration used, IIRC, cut down washers but I decided to use some rectangles of thick-ish plastic that I cut off something or other. These were almost as thick as the grooves on the existing clips and were Araldited in place. Then I gave them a quick blast of primer before painting them yellow, as you do:

Extended Roof Rails

Finally managed to fit some extended roof rails today, which is one of the few mods that I knew that I wanted to do when I first bought the vehicle. The kit was an eBay special and, whilst I'm happy with them now that they're fitted, it suffered from a lack of attention to detail. For example, the rails require four fixing bolts each but the kit only included six. Also, the supplied washers were too big to go through the access holes to the fixing points in the rails. These were not insurmountable problems, but annoying nonetheless.

Anyway, first job is removing the existing short rails. These are held on with three M6 T30 torx head bolts concealed under plastic cover caps. The latter are easily levered out with a small screwdriver, although they are quite brittle and one did disintegrate. (Excuse the dust. It was clean yesterday but came out this morning to a coat of yellow over everything Rolling Eyes )

Next is to remove the aluminium cover strip on the front lower part of the roof. This is secured with one of those plastic fir tree fixings, which can be removed with a trim tool, and a push-on concealed friction clip near to the front:

The hole in the cover strip needs to be enlarged to reveal the flat shoulder of the fixing point. The instructions say that the new hole needs to be 19mm diameter but I managed with 13mm:

The channel underneath the existing rails and cover strip was filthy with years of accumulated road dirt, so a quick clean up was in order before fitting the new rails:

With the cover strip pushed back in place, and having resolved the lack of fixings in the kit, it's relatively straightforward to bolt on the new rails. I really like the look but the real purpose is a practical one - I have a long roof box for my Oztent called an Ozpod, which is nearly 2.5m long, and these will enable that to be mounted more centrally along the roof.

Great thread ... makes me realise how hopeless I am with jobs I'd like to do on mine.

What are your plans for the short roof rails as I've been after a set just like the ones you've taken off Whistle

The short roof rails are going to be for sale - I just ran out of time to work out the postage cost yesterday. They can be yours for £50 plus whatever the postage is, or come and collect them if you get to my part of the world.

Thanks, Ken.

In between showers today and just for the hell of it, I managed to take this snap:

This was on the way back from the tip having disposed of a complete garden shed. Putting it in the back of the Discovery was only necessary because they wouldn't accept exactly the same stuff in my trailer Evil or Very Mad
