A footnote to the above:

I have just installed Pirelli Scorpion Zero 275/55R19 tyres and so far they are great. Very smooth and quiet on the road. Sidewalls are fairly soft so the ride is very compliant. BTW they only just clear the Upper Control Arm - less than 10mm clearance.

I have not tried them in the sand yet it is 45degC in the desert now.
I will probably wait until October.

Hi Brocky,

Just wondering how the new Scorpions have performed. Where did purchase them?

Cheers

I have a FFRR on loan from the stealers while the D3 gets a new engine - it's running a set of Pirelli Scorpion Zero on 19" rims. They are NOISY and vibrate! The car has 26,000km on it and I assume they've been on since new, but they ruin the altogether fantastic ride of the Range Rover. So definitely keep rotating them! If this were my car I'd be looking to replace them, and 26k is not long at all...

Guys I am looking to replace my standard 19'' Rims and GY Wranglers with a 17'' rims/tyres more suited to road/desert use. I know there are quite a few posts but cant seem to find anyone who has done this specifically for desert use. I am hoping to be able to find a set of 17'' alloy rims out here in Dubai as many people chop the standard LR rims for bling!! I will then run my standard tyres through the summer and switch when the weather cools and i'm more oftern in the desert.

As Brocky has stated the standard tyres aint great in the sand and have had the same issues when out with others in LC Prado's.

10forcash are you saying that you cant run 17/18 inch rims on a petrol varient?

Brocky any more int on your scorpions?

If I have to stick to 19'' what are my limits both in width and diameter?

Any info much appreciated!!

Cheers

question to the wise, why does the V8 need a bigger rotor? mine stops adequately, why cant the diesel rotors be put on allowing 17" rims to be used Question

18 inch rims are standard on the petrol V8 SE in South Africa. You can only use 18 inch and upwards due to the larger brakes.

So is there more choice of suitable road/desert tyres and more importantly will the extra inch make all the difference ( I know my wifes answer to that one!! Laughing )

What about tyre width, how wide can the standard rims go and how wide is too wide ( Dont have to worry about overhanging too much as it only rains once a year!!) before you start rubbing etc.

Basically guys does anyone know what the limits are?

Once again thanks for the assistance.

Theres a lot more choice in 18" off-road tyres, both A/T and M/T. The taller side wall also lets you air down further and gives more protection to the rim from pot-holes etc.

Not sure what the width limit is, but 285/60/18 fits ok and that's a fair bit wider that the stock 255s.

Thanx Jonty, One more question- is there a set of rims available from LR in 18'', and do any of the rims from earlier models/RRS/FFRR fit?

Cheers
