On the back of my new style handle there is a serrated ring, but nothing corresponding to it on the red plastic ring that is screwed to the bracket, hence why I can turn it.

I am now starting to wonder if there is a problem here with brackets that have had the handle replaced. The new lock/handle assembly did not come with a replacement red ring.

Has anyone got a new bracket, that can remove the lock and take a picture of what's on the back face of the handle and the outside face of the red ring?

On the LRCR part of this forum, that's what I found with my "old" tow bar. The thing was rattling loose, and it was found that you could turn the green handle which would cause the bar to drop slightly, even with it locked and the key removed. I bought a replacement which stays where it should.

At the Dealers, we replaced the handle, but it didn't do anything as the insides were different. I bought the previous tow bar when I had my D3 in 2009. It would appear that the design was changed in 2009 (which is the current one), so my "old" one must have been older stock.

There are 2 slightly different replacement locks available depending on that ratchet red bit , I know as TLO sent me the wrong one (there is a pic in my gallery)

Well yesterday I fitted the Witter Fixed Tow-hitch due to the amount of worry on this subject. Hopefully this will prevent my tintent from wandering off on its own. One other thing I am wondering about it the amount of crud and rust the rear cross member is subject to and the effect that towing has on the socket that is welded into it.....

Land Rover never admitted there was a fault with the old one but fitted the ratchet system to the new ones. Works a lot better. Have not heard of any of the D4 ones parting company over here.
The D4 one always stays tight with out any movement. can not turn D4 handle backwards with out pulling handle out first.

Just a comment on the brakeaway cable not applying the brake.

How many people still attach it to the ball eg if that falls off, the cable isn't attached to the car so will do nothing

This is bloody terrible, I can't believe there is no reaction from LR. I will point the problem out to MOT next time here in Sweden and have them help me prove this is a fabrication issue. My tow bar is hardly used although a 2008.

When the Disco has such an easy point to fix to why would anyone loop it over the ball, which I think is illegal anyway.

I attach the breakaway cable to the fixed Ring above where the tow bar mounts. I suspect though, if you had a 3.5t trailer and it came off while going around a corner the delay in braking and the load coming onto the breakaway would probably shift the car off the road.

I tow a 3.5t trailer with a boat with my detachable and have become paranoid after reading the stories on here. Everything appears rock solid, truth be told the tow bar has not been removed since I bought it in 2009. Embarassed maybe worth removing it and having a check.

I think once I buy one I will be fitting a fixed tow bar after reading some of the horror stories, although a lot is probably down to user error.

user error shouldnt come into it.....as it means you can "fit the hook incorrectly"....or just leave it in place....which should never be an issue with anything.
The makers changing the rules without really telling anybody isnt on either..they have a duty of care

Yes LandRover have to come to the party....thier absence is very significant

My hook was also solid in place when I bought my car. In Sweden we have to be able to remove the tow bar on inspection so I had to get it out. I had to gently tap it with a rubber hammer from underneith to get it out. After cleaning it of and upon inspection it does not look worn at all, BUT it can move around a lot now if the green handle is turned a bit.

Land Rover need to comment this soon, there is another site with a lot of bad stories regarding this matter.

I would really like to get one of those SS securing brackets. Are they still available?

Out of interest can anyone get me any alternative stats of road deaths caused by any trailer detachments for any car since 2007 .... I can find reports for 1 person and it was in 2007.

MOT towbar failures on all cars are consistently below .01% since 2009

MOT failures for car brakes on the other hand have been averagely 11% Shocked

What shall we worry more about eh??

Still, a little hysteria never hurt anyone eh Whistle Wink
