How accurate is the MPG counter on D3?
Hi All;
Was travelling back from Stratford upon-Avon back to Windsor (M40/A404/M4), and decided to run some MPG tests on my disco whilst at the M40, as I have recently serviced the "beast".
Very interesting & impressive results - and questionable (I think).
What was very clear, if you break the 1900RPM, the consumption goes up very quickly!

The MPG counter was reset every time between tests.
Methodology 1 - 68 Mph/ 1900 RPM:
Cruise control ON
10 miles stretch
Shell Diesel V power
1 passenger
Disco 3 HSE 2007 82K miles
19" inches wheels with P-Zeros
2 air-con units (Fron and Rear)
Test 1: Air-Con switched off, just blower on: 42.4 MPG!
Test 2: Air-Con switched on - Front only: 39.3
MPG!
Test 3: Air-Con switched on - Front and Rear units: 39.0 MPG!
Methodology 2 - 79 Mph/ 2200 RPM:
Cruise control ON
10 miles stretch
Shell Diesel V power
1 passenger
Disco 3 HSE 2007 82K miles
19" inches wheels with P-Zeros
2 air-con units (Fron and Rear)
Test 4: Air-Con switched on - Front and Rear units: 30.5 MPG!
I'm riding a R1250GSA Triple Back
Previous love: Disco 3 HSE MY07, D4 heated Steering/W, D4 rear cluster, D4 extended roof rack, D4 grille & air grille, D4 rear bumper, colour coded arches + front bumper, side-steps, Webasto timer/ remote control, De-Tangoed Xenon headlights + HID, LEDs all around, reverse CAM (RR hack) + brightness, DLR LEDs, 3-click indicator, SatNav on the move, EGR's done, front/rear antiroll bar Polybush, gearbox pan/filter + oil mega-flush.

It's just messing with your mind with those high figures, one downhill after a reset will do that. When you get to more normal numbers knock between 2 & 5 mpg off the trip comp for reality. Expect a long term real average of 26 - 27mpg.
PS On my 06 auto a/c on or off makes no difference.

So I've tracked my MPG using a spreadsheet since getting the D3 in October, on a full tank and driving like a Nun, the D3 may state I did 34mpg as I'm pulling in to fill up, but when I put the figures into the spreadsheet, it comes out at about 30 mpg ish
So my particular computer is out by 13%
So I always aim to get 33+ mpg on the car which means I'm doing late 20's early 30's in real terms Iggy/Ieuan

it tells porkies...
& cons you into thinking that your D3/4 is better at fuel drinking than it really is
whatever inputs there are intothe blacjk box they are fooled by being at 70 - 80, in cruise, flipping the lever left & then command shift into 6th...you get an instant increase in MPG...which you dont.
it a bit like a weather vane....approximateBREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics

Think mine over reads by about 2mpg.
Over 10 miles then you should be fairly accurate with the readings, but remember you was already going at speed, its getting to 60-80 mph that drinks the fuel not staying there.

Fuelly - app and website is very useful too - and you can easily compare your car to others (of the same type or different).

AFAIK you can only add them manually, including for past data. Easy but boring job. Good for when nowt on the tele.
Screen print above is idog&bone, the discerning choice of phone.

Not sure about your app - but with fuelly the data is stored "in the cloud" so changing phone (or just wiping and restting) doesn't lose your data and you can then also access it from any phone, tablet or computer.

That sounds right up Iguana's street.
He'll probably do a spreadsheet of all the time he's spent inputting the data into the spreadsheet that he uses to populate the app...

App data backed up automatically via the cloud and can be downloaded to new device in three shakes of a lamb's tail.
