The old two stroke oil chestnut

Hi fellow Aussies. I've been reading frantically the posts on the Disco Forum and I came across the thread(s) regarding the use of 2 stroke oil in diesel. One thing I could not seem to find was a definitive answer as to whether or not this practice is applicable to Australian diesel fuel. I ask this because I know UK and Euro diesels are a bit different to here.

Could anyone give me some thought on this? Are LR3 drivers using 2T oil here?



On a side note, I've had the vehicle for the last couple of weeks and am loving it. I've had to replace the rear ARB bushes (what a difference) and probably need to replace the front soon. The washer motor is also cactus, but I have a new one on the way. I took the car out last weekend on the Bridle Track near Hill End and the car performed brilliantly. It took the missus a bit to get used to a bigger car, but now she seems ok with it.

And lastly, do LR3 owners have regular meets in NSW? Always good to chew the fat over common ideas and stuff.

Personally I don't, but I do run B20 from the servo in Marrickville every few tanks or so to clean out the system before there is too much buildup. You can definitely feel the difference with the B20.

Hi Discoandrewoz, I've been using about 400ml 2 stroke per tank for the last couple of years and have had no issues (so far touch wood!!) To my layman's ears the engine definitely sounds less ratteley and seems to perform better.Currently according to the on board computer I get about 32MPG travelling up & down Macquarie Pass to work in Wollongong from Moss Vale. Cheers Dale. Why 400ml? The UK guys seem to mostly put about 200ml in the tank.

It was on offer here a while back at a similar price per litre as diesel. The doses increased somewhat afterwards!
I was putting in 500 ml per tank - stocks are dwindling now so don't add every time anymore.

1 litre 2SO in 200 of diesel is the usual amount (proportion. Dosaje)

So:

500ml in 100 litres
475 in 95
450 in 90
425 in 85
400 in 80
375 in 75
350 in 70
325 in 65
300 in 60
275 in 55
250 in 50
225 in 45
200 in 40
175 in 35
150 in 30
125 in 25
100 in 20
75 in 15
50 in 10
25 in 5

So......easiest way to not remember this table is:

Multiply litres poured in the tank by 5.... And you have the number of mililiters.
This is my method. Is spot on.
Or....if you have a permanten marker, write the liters side by the mililiters in the measuring rig or bottle.

Hi Discoandrewoz, I use the formula as quoted by CUCO, 400ml goes into the tank either before or after filling with (about) 80 litres. As I said, seems to have worked for me. No excess smoke, a quieter engine & seemingly better mileage. Regards, Dale

I have been using Castrol Activ 2T (Supercheap Auto) with each refill for the last 2 years in my 2007.

I typically add it a bit richer than the recommended 200:1 and put around 400ml in with 70l diesel.

My car had been developing all of the black smoke ailments associated with sticking EGRs and turbo vanes but it all disappeared after a couple of tanks with the 2T added.

I've certainly discovered that the Discovery 3 is a bit more expensive than my last car on repairs and parts. Not complaining (well the missus is)

Anyway thanks all for your feedback. Next fill I will give it a go.

I have been putting it in my RRS for about 2 years - I cannot note any differences at all but I still consider it cheap insurance in case I get some dodgy fuel some time and it just might provide a little more protection for the injection pump.

I have not seen better fuel consumption, quieter running or less smoke. I think people imagine these things.

I added 200 ml of the Castrol T2 per tank for about six months;

What was the difference?

mileage ... No difference.

Engine noise, yes it was quieter, deadened the rattle noises down considerably and my engine at that time only had 40k on the clock so it wasn't a high mileage engine.

Power ... Seat of the pants it felt slightly slower to get up and going, once going though no difference.

After six months I decided from my experiences it made little to no difference, so I gave up using it.

There is a good argument just to put better quality fuel in that already has additives...

The few pennies extra that is charged per litre is equivalent to dumping 2 stroke in. Just get this niggling feeling that it can't be good to dump in an additive that is less refined than the base fuel.
