2.7 Head Gaskets

So after a large amount of hard work over several weekends I have fitted a replacement engine into my discovery, I did this on the drive without taking the body off and I have to say its a bit of a pain in the A?£*e to do but it was the only way I was going to get it back on the road reasonably cheap. However now the engine is in and running it has at least one blown head gasket!!! I'm assuming that's why the engine was removed by the seller in the first place, other than blowing combustion gasses out of the coolant bottle the moment I start the car it runs fine. To test the EGR coolers I bypassed the coolant pipework and ran the car but the issue is still there, I have done a sniff test and it's definitely combustion gases in the coolant so I'm pretty certain its the head gasket. My question is does any one have any top tips for doing the head gaskets with the engine still in the car, and anything I should look at/replace while I'm in there I'm in no rush so I'll take my time and see how I go, my theory is that it cant be any harder than swapping the engine but we will see!!!! Laughing

Cheers
Paul

The drivers side head is much easier to do.

Passenger side is a pain !

Gasket thickness is customised to each engine (number of tabs at the front of the engine tells you the thickness)

So don’t just blindly order any gasket.

I’ve written some guides on here if you search on my user name.

Drivers side fairly straightforward, passenger not so. To be frank if I got offered 5 grand to do head gaskets on a car with body on I’d decline. Never again.

Ha Ha it does look an absolute pain and I'll probably regret it when I get halfway through but I'm in too deep now to give up. Does anyone know if the bolts for the camshaft caps are reusable??I would assume not but I cant find anywhere selling them.

Cheers

Yes. They only 10Nm

It’s the head bolts you need to renew.

Are you loosing coolant.

Are sure the oil cooler is ok?

Thanks, that saves me spending more money!! oil cooler seems ok, no water in oil or oil in water it's not loosing coolant but as soon as it start it is pressurises and lifts the cap on the coolant bottle. In the end I removed and coolant crossover pipe on the top of the engine and started it for a minute, as soon as it starts I get exhaust gas out of the passenger side head. It looks likes that the more difficult one so I may as well do them both once I'm in there.

Cheers
Paul

Quick probably daft question but on the passenger side do you need to take the pulley off the back of the Cam that drives the fuel pump?? I can prob get it off but can’t figure out how to tighten and torque back up.?? Just weighing the job up before I jump in…. I don’t believe the plastic housing off the fuel belt can come off without the pulley being off so the cam won’t come out?

Thought you would do the driver side first ?

I took the cam and plastic cover off as one assembly to avoid undoing the pulley.

Pain getting the plastic cover off. Probably needs to come off though

Cheers for those some really good stuff to help me. I made a mistake above it’s the passenger head that’s gone (I updated the post), so that’s why I’m doing this one first, hopefully get this one out and the other side should be easy… Laughing
