Winter Tyres - Nokian, Nokian, Dunlop or Vredestein
Dear All
Looking to put some winter boots on my Disco4. I'm tempted by the CCB rating and low(ish) price of the Nokian WR SUV 3 (£160) but am wondering if the C wet rating might mean they are a little soft and wear quickly.
I'm also been contemplating the slightly more expensive Goodyear Ultra Grip SUV (ECB) (£176) and the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D (CCA) (£200)
From another post I've had today I know several members are running Wintrac Xtreme (CEB rated) (£145) and would welcome additional opinions on these as well - especially wrt the E rated wet performance - in a big heavy disco I'm thinking it might matter !!!
All prices above are from TyreLeader website.

Had Nokian Winters on last vehicle, was so impressed I also bought a set of Nokian Summer tyres.
Made in Finland, they are regarded as a premium tyre brand just like Michelen, Goodyear, Bridgestone, etc.
Excellent value for money.
Btw, why is Nokian listed twice in the Poll ?🏴

Maybe because its listed twice in the thread title and I wasn't reading the words 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Scroll down to the bottom of the page for SUV/4x4 tests.
I'd stick with one of the Land Rover recommended tyres, all of which they've tested and approved.
Hopefully Ken will post on here or your other thread. He's got valuable first hand experience of cold weather tyres fitted to most if not all of the current LR range.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Not had them on a big heavy disco but previously had Dunlop winter sport 4d on my 1.8 tonne A6 Quattro and they were sublime
Would like to know how they handle the extra weight and why they are so expensive in 19"

Vredestein are very popular and we have just had a new price list negotiated with them with some very nice prices.
Vreds for me but to be fair I've not tried the others. Went (like you prob) on recommendations. Been very happy with them____

On a D3 or D4 the Wintracs are great in cold weather, icy conditions, slush, snow, heavy rain, dry braking, consistent handling, no tram lining, quiet, tough, long lasting even if driven all year. Good price too.
The 2 negatives are damp/greasy conditions associated with light rain or wet mown grass with that thin fine mud that gets in the sipes (think Bambi on ice for this last point).
I've driven on Nokians in all conditions and was impressed, but I have no long- term experience with them so no idea how they perform in the warmer months or how long they last. Prices were extreme but not looked at current prices.

I currently am using, and well pleased with B F Goodrich AT KO tyres (245/70/ R17) supplied & recommended by AJS they seem to be a good compromise, and no wear is discernible after 12.5k miles!
Previously I had GG AT2s which I took off part warn as last December I drove overland to the Peloponnese & back, heavily laden.
The GG AT2s looked as if they would have easily done 60k miles - that's on 4 not 5, which reminds me I must sell the unused spare!

Wintracs on mine (or will be when I swap to winters later in the year) and have been happy with them - however it hasn't snowed yet!!!
There are better off road snow/ice type tyres out there but if you're using tarmacced roads and just want to make sure you're not the idiot who has a 4x4 and can't get up that hill or still needs to get down that unswept road - wintracs will do you very nicely and are reasonably priced.MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)

I fitted Nokians on my old Volvo XC90. Fantastic tyres in low temperatures, ice, snow and slush. Nokian say that you can leave their tyres on all year round.
Sold the XC90 to my In Laws in 2012 and they still have them on. They have probably covered 22,000 mile and are just coming up for replacement.

How do the standard M+S-stamped but not winter 20" Pirelli Scorpion Zeros cope in snow?
Yes, that's a question I have too.
I've read that the standard LR M+S tyres as fitted are 80-90% as good in the snow as a dedicated winter tyre (in which case why have a special winter set?) but has anyone done a comparison ?
