Thought I'd post this one here as I figure the vast majority of petrol V6 drivers are on the Aussie section.
I took my father for a drive in the Disco the other day - he used to be a mechanic and he thought that he could hear more manifold noise than he would have expected - anyone know if this is standard for the Jaguar unit or should I get it to the service guys.
As an aside and for anyone reading this before purchasing a Disco I can say that in the first 4000km its has been absolutely faultless and I still find myself thinking 'Why would anyone buy any other car'
Thanks
M.

I believe the petrol V6 is not a Jaguar unit, it is Ford sourced power plant, the V8 is Jaguars.
I have a TDV6 and the manifold and tappet noise is noticeable when you put your foot down or under load. I think it is normal. If they had located the air intake manifold to the left side, instead of the right, it might be less noisy??!!
However, compared to other trucks, it is damn quiet!!! That's why I bought one!!! '06 Disco 3 TDV6 SE Buckingham Blue

I actually picked my new 4.0V6 up yesterday. Prior to driving it away from the dealers I had only driven the TDV6, as at the time I wanted to order there weren't any 4.0s around. It is a wee bit "throaty" when getting off the mark (less than the v8 i suspect), but unbelievably quiet thereafter. I actually like the sound of the engine - I was a bit anxious about how the 4.0 would sound, but it turned out "beefier" than I expected.
Absolutely love driving it so far. Only minor thing is that on about 10% of the changes from gears 1 to 2 and back, the transmission is a bit rough/clunky. Not sure if that is how it should be, if it just needs time to settle down, or if this is something I should get looked into....
4.0 is Ford sourced, and as used in the Ford Explorer, but with LR tweaks.

Long time since my first post on the subject but I just thought I would update you on the throaty noise from the 4.0L - I mentioned this to the service folk and they investigated and found that a manifold flange needed tightening - now the engine is virtually silent so all's good - if your petrol engined Disco is sounding a bit throaty then I can advise that you get it checked.
