Rattly noise on part throttle - turbo? |
|
I have noticed that on part/light throttle I can hear a rattly sound - a bit like marbles in a can coming from the engine bay. I want to say its turbo related but am not 100% sure. I know there has been a few other threads on here regarding this but none I've seen have come to any sort of conclusion and they all seem to have slightly different symptoms.
Anyone experienced this know a fix?

The greatest mystery of the forum
The threads always splinter into "different noises" but this particular one has not fully been identified. The consensus is "turbo related" but nothing conclusive.
I would love to find out as mine is really loud but 10K later it hasn't done any harm (I think!)

I've driven myself a little crazy over this, I now find myself listening out for passing D3's and RRS's and I have to say 9 out of 10 sound the same, in fact yesterday I was walking through the car park of the local super market and I thought someone had drove off in my car... as i looked round it was a 2008 RRS and it sounded just the same as mine on light throttle...
its a tinkering, metallic type of noise, only on light throttle, if you let off the throttle its as quiet as a mouse...
I've read a lot of posts on this noise and the one thing in common is it seems to appear on vehicles that have had the brake servo vacuum pipe work upgrade... which is most D3's now a days... this makes me think its vacuum related Admin on Facebook Discovery 3 & 4 Ownersgroup

I'm tempted to hunt down some old D3 vacuum pipe work and change it over just to see if the noise vanishes Admin on Facebook Discovery 3 & 4 Ownersgroup

hmm, makes me a feel a bit better I suppose. I had wondered if it was something to do with the wastegate actuator. But I think that is a separate issue altogether.

Confirm my 08 TDV6 does the same and has done so as long as I've had it...
Sounds like a box of excited cicadas under the bonnet at various light throttle settings/let off.

Are you talking about Euro 3 diesel clatter? That is normal. Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

Mine is a 55 Reg and has been making this noise for past 7 years, when I hear a D3 go by I always listen for it some do and some don't nothing to worry about I think.
Much more concern for me is my car is in the stealers tomorrow about a grinding noise and judder its just started to make, possible causes suggested by them:
Wheel bearing
Front Diff
Drive shaft
Torque Converter
All expensive but hope its not the last one but suspect it may be as rev counter moves around slightly at 70 mph
Club Narpy Torch

He has been proved right, now there is only bust!

Hello. I have just picked up a 07 d3 and it is also making this noise. Garage cannot figure out what it is so am trying to figure it out so that I can go back to them so it can be resolved
Any thoughts?

From what I have read and gathered, this is a 'normal' occurrence with many people experiencing it (if indeed it is all the same noises/issues). It seems to be turbo related. I was wondering if it was to do with the waste gate/assembly vibrating on part throttle.
