Depreciation over 10 years
I happened to look at the order form for my D3 when bought back in early 2005. £27000 with some extras. Take off perhaps £7000 residual value now and that works out at £2000 a year. If I also (wrongly) take off the trade in value of my old VW Sharan in 2005 , then it is less than £1000 per year
Not bad for a car that is still a great drive and with help of this forum is not too costly to maintain.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

'Manmaths' I don't think thats bad at all! Before I had my D3 I had a new Fiesta ST and in less than a year I lost over £7000 never buying new again......well maybe a Discovery at some some point

Now you have me checking my maths, which I managed to get wrong I missed off the £5000 VAT, so the depreciation is still only £2500 per annum, or using my glass half full argument, £1500 pa 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

£7.90 per day - so I have paid for the Disco by not drinking two pints per day. Back of the envelope maths; from when I bought new to a ballpark value looks to be about £9 a day depreciation over 9ish years, factor in an average cost of service, tyres, warranty etc of about £1500 per year comes out at about £50K down the pan over the time it's only money and theeeeennn......???

I paid £34k for mine. It's probably worth £6k
It's 116 months since I bought her so thats £28k / 116 = £241 per month in depreciation or £2892 per year.
I'm quite happy with that. She's also ridiculously reliable.

I'm not going to work out the rest, would be far too depressing. Especially when I bought the car diesel was 80odd pence a ltr. Plus maintenance, warranty costs & other running costs. About the same as my first house.

I made the school boy error of buying brand new in 2004 and selling at the end of the 3 year warranty. It had been in to main dealers so many times for warranty work I didn't fancy taking on the repair bills myself. There wasn't the DIY knowledge around in those days or forums like these to help keep the maintenance bills realistic.
Anyway, bought for around £35k and sold for £20k A cool £5k a year.
Now in a 55 plate HSE that cost me £11k, can't see that dropping below £5k in the next 3 years so a much better investment. Added bonus is that so far been far more reliable than the brand new one I had!!!Discovery 4 HSE

All these figures are a misconception nobody has lost anything on their vehicles I can never understand owners who have traveled 100+ thousand mile in a vehicle over all types of terrain, towed a trailer, horse box or caravan with up tp 7 people on board and then say they have lost x thousand pounds in depreciation.
It is what it has cost to travel x thousand miles, not how much the vehicle has depreciated in value It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thankfully I wasn't the original purchaser of my car. Which is a 56 plate HSE.
The original buyer somehow managed to pay £42k for it according to the invoice! Bought it at 7 years old with service plan and WD warranty thrown in for £13k
They swapped it for a 08 Plate Mondeo! That's got to be the worst depreciation ever with a huge kick in the teeth to boot of having to drive a Mondeo.
One thing I will say is that with all the fun and trips we've had in the D3 since we bought it I know I haven't lost a penny. When you can pay £8k for a First Class Flight around the world these days, the D3 seems an absolute bargain
If I add up all the airline tickets I've paid big money for to be wafted around the world in luxury, the D3 does it for me every day.
The wife's Astra we paid over £20k for at the begging of the year though.....now that just feels I've been bent over and used....dry.
