Wheel rim wear - General Grabber AT
Has anyone else had an issue with wear on the inside rim of alloy wheels?
I have just taken my 2 year old 50,000 mile D4 in for new tyres and the tyre people refused to fit them because the inside rim of the wheels is shockingly worn (I would guesstimate down from 10mm of metal to 3mm). All 4 wheels are the same.
I have spoken to the Land Rover dealer who are blaming the All Terrain tyres and are refusing to help. The vehicle is still under warranty. I have run it on Grabbers from new.
Any experience would be useful to know about before I go into battle with Land Rover. It is a 2012 HSE on 19" rims.

My dealer told me this is due to grit getting caught between the rim and the tyre, wearing the alloy as you drive....they've seen a few examples, and warned me to keep an eye out
I was going to post their warnings, but didn't want to get shot down in flames
Ps I have Grabbers on 19's also"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

I'm not convinced it's just Grabbers, when I first got mine one of the rims was so worn you couldn't have fitted a clip on wheel weight on the inner edge. The lip was completely gone. It didn't have Grabbers on then.
I've just swapped a tyre on my V70 today and it had a similar feathering on it.IID PRO

It's not a Grabber thing per se, it appears to be a combination of wheel rim shape vs the tyre design. On top of this you need something to grind on.
Asking around I've yet to find anyone on 18" Grabbers that have this issue.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Unfortunetly I forgot to take a photo. They don't look disimilar to the photos in the link above but are more worn. The advice was definately not to drive on them.
If they were 5 years and 150,000 miles old I would find it easier to accept but I am shocked to see them in that condition after 2 years and 50,000 miles.2016 D4 Landmark - Waitomo/Ebony

What style of wheel was it?
I've seen this a few times on 19s with GG at tyres. All were one style of wheel.
Disco Mikey had the same issue with a set he bought last year.

Ring another dealer and explain the problem, see what they say. Or even tell them it's gt original tyres on, would be interesting to hear the differnt answers depending on the tyres you mention!

Had exactly the same with D4 wheels, that were fitted with Grabber ATs
Not only this tyre that causes these issues, but it is caused by grit getting in between the tyre and rim, and the tyre flexing causes it to wear away the rim.

Not the best photos but these show the wheel design and the wear.
It doesn't come out that clearly but on the photo showing the wear you can see the gap between the rim and tyre is much closer at the bottom where the weight is closing the gap than it is around the rest of the rim - this is what has worn away. All 4 wheels are the same.
What is concerning is that I saw a friend last night who has a Discovery 4 on 19 inch Grabbers and was about to tell him he had better check when he told me his is going in for 4 new wheels today! His has done about 65,000 miles on the Grabbers but are a different design of wheel (I think they are a 2009 HSE design).
It certainly appears that there is an issue but it would be interesting to know how widespread it is and whether there have been issues on other makes of tyres.

Ok,that's exactly the design of 19's that I have my GGAT's on.
Mine go on over the Winter for about 4-5 months ,which would cut down the road mileage compared to other users but they get used off-road also, which I suppose would increase the amount of dirt/grit that gets trapped between the rim and the tyre......so I'm going to have to be extra vigilante I think.....
I do pressure wash between the outer rim and the tyre after the warning from my Dealer, but obviously I can't get to the inside edge...."Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...
