Rear drums and disk query |
|
I hope someone can help clarify a query for me. I've had my Discovery4 to the dealer today for a squeak from the rear brakes. They have stripped the brakes and found the rear handbrake shoes have disintegrated and need replacing. They are saying that this has scored the disks and these need to be replaced.
Can anyone confirm if this is correct? I assumed the handbrake drum and shoes were separate from the break disk.
Also, as the car is under LandRover warranty should this be covered or is it excluded as a wear and tear part?
Thanks

The parking brake pads apply pressure to the inside of the rear disks so yes, you do need to replace them to sort the issue.

If you getting new discs make sure they also replace the pads. LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Sadly, it's all too familiar a story! The discs are top-hat-shaped. The hand brake (EPB) is a drum brake with shoes inside the 'top' of the hat. The brim of the hat is the disc brake, with pads pressed onto the outside by a conventional calliper.
If the car is new, I would argue that it's been standing in wet conditions and this had caused the corrosion. Otherwise, new discs, shoes and pads should (if done properly) set you right. Went for a job as a human cannonball. Not the right calibre.
