Prospective buyer queries

Hello all,

My name is Chris and I'm from East Sussex.
I've been looking for a new vehicle for a while now and I spotted a D3 TDV6 SE that I like the look of, 90k miles with a FSH, memory seats, nav etc. I'm looking for some buyers advice, before I arrive for a test drive and an inspection. It's an 07 plate so I guess a MY08?

I'm aware of a few things to be particular about:

- Handbrake, make sure you can pull away and it disengages
- Usual groans and knocks from suspension arms/bushes
- Brake squeal
- Any sign of water ingress
- Unusual tyre wear
- Lumps, bumps and scrapes in general

Is there anything else more specific I need to be aware of that I can inspect/test?
Is there anything I need to consider before buying, any wallet burning surprises that I should prepare for?
Is 90k miles an issue or nothing to worry about?
Is the Satnav any good? Or am I better off with my phone?
Is there anyway to retrofit items such as Bluetooth/DAB/iPod connector?
What initial mods do you guys recommend? Brake upgrade? Remap?
What benefits does the HSE give over the SE?

I have taken a gloss over these forums and I'm learning on a steep upward curve but I really appreciate any input or help you can give me! Thanks in advance!

Potential forum regular,
-Chris

No 1 Check the Cam belts have done and ask about the Oil pump Casing.

Sat Nav is not the best, but works.

BT and Ipod can be retro fitted, DAB can but I have not had great success with this.

Mods can be done but best to wait until you get the car then decide.

Flack Thumbs Up

Wait for a chorus of "Oil Pump Casing" replies Smile

Check suspension and special programmes all work as expected
Satnav is okay but there are much better options out there. It's just nice that it's built-in
You can certainly fit an iPod. There is an official audio connection module (ACM) or you can do it the cheap way as I have and tap into the Aux input in the footwell and add a Belkin type unit.

The oil pump casing design was changed during the D3 lifetime a number of times. It has been known to fail in certain model years which has fairly catastrophic consequences for the engine.

Have a search on here and you'll find lots of info.

Set aside money to change it for the latest design if it hasn't already been done.

If you need a good indy Mark West of West 4x4 is excellent - again search the forum.

Thanks guys,

Oil pump casing is added to my checklist.

Luckily I have a LR specialist literally a mile away, so if I bought this, I may hand it to him for an extra inspection.

If you have a good indy it might be wise to have him inspect the car before you purchase.

He can then give you a price for the necessary work, and you may be able to negotiate a reduction from the vendor.

That would be handy but the dealer I'm buying from and the specialist are ~200 miles apart!

Check suspension (does this one have air) rises and falls evenly when raising or lowering and that it does not drop over time (there is a normal settlement after ~30seconds when leaving the car).

Check low range box engages smoothly and you can drive in low range

As mentioned previously, check all the special programs activate and that you can drive a short distance in each one

If you cannot get it to a decent indy, is it worth having an RAC or AA inspection?

Thanks Mr. Tom, noted those points.

The dealer I'm buying from is not a LR specialist but they do turn over quite a few LRs. I have dealt with them in the past but buying their more regular marque, Audi.

Yes it does have air suspension (I think they all did by this model year?) so that's definitely something to check.

So my dilemma is this 2 different (but very similar) D3s are available to me at the same price, anyone care to help?

Similarities:
Both green
Light colour leather
Both FSH
Both TDV6
Both have Nav

Differences
2007 v 2008
93k v 100k
SE v XS
No sunroofs v sunroofs! (I like them)
Memory seats v not having them
Auto v Manual

Can anyone help me choose?!?
