Just out of interest- I dread to think what the insurers will say when/if you hand it to a 17yo!

Thats not much more than some of the quotes I've heard for 1.0L Clio's for 17yr olds
Absolutely love this thread. There is no better vehicle on the market for a work horse and family car. I had no brand loyalty when I was choosing mine, but I listed on paper everything I wanted it to do and it came down to either a Volvo XC90 or the Disco3. It was a no brainer and seeing these pics, just reinforces that I made the right decision. I just wish I could of afforded one 10 years ago when my eldest was a baby (baby changing unit tail gate ).

Where were they from though? With a 17 year old you really need to go to a proper broker - comparison sites will just fob you off. The equivalent quote based on my 53 Passat was about £900 and IIRC, and old Defender would have been ~£1500.
Anyway, I digress...Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

To be honest, and I know this might sound flipant, but when my daughter has her licence and is driving I don't care what the insurance costs as long as I know she is safe. If I use the Disco then I don't need to buy her a car, so I save that cost anyway. If at 12 years, the Old Bus is too tired then I will buy her a newish D4 and suck up the cost.
The recent accidents in Wales and Manachester this week in which six young people died and many more were injured and also my previous experience working in the trauma market (medical devices and implants) just reinforces to me how precarious life can be. Unfortunatley I have seen or know of too many young lives snuffed out in small cars, either through their own fault or the actions of others.New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

After a head on collision in a 300 TDi we said we'd never have anything but a LR again. Economy forced us to drop the second LR but, as our main car, nothing else will do. After the accident in our FL2 (which did offer good protection), it was reassuring to be back in a Disco.Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

£520 fully comp insurance in her name for our 18yr old on provisional licence, she has a Felicia pickup that cost us all of £625. And it's handy for moving the crap that we don't wont to put in the Discovery and you can get quite a few bales on it.

Great thread, your car has obviously been part of the family over the last 10 5/6 years.

Nice thread - everyone's too polite to mention the badly fitted door protectors though... Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I love the pictures and the way your family has grown up around the disco.........a bit like having a dog grow up with your children!!
My missus and I refer to the D3 as a way of life, not just a car!

I have had a very similar experience with a last of line Discovery 2 Td5 Landmark, in my cherished care for over 9 years now. Quite simply the best, most versatile, practical family car I can think of. My wife was pregnant with our youngest whos coming 9 when I bought it and hes grown up with it, safely carried home from hospital and on countless journeys since. Daily school runs, work commutes, holidays tugging a big twin axle caravan all over France this big car just does it all without complaining (except for a few oil leaks!). Sure its had its issues and needed work over the years but so much of it is easily done on a driveway on a DIY basis.
Ive just turned over 140K miles and at 12 years old its still a good looking car, I know it will have to be replaced sooner or later and being a LR fan its natural Im looking at D3s or 4s. The only concern I have is the increased complexity and higher bills that will undoubtedly result. I'll do it some day undoubtedly but at the minute Im still loving my D2 so much I cant bear to part with it, not many cars Ive felt like that about!

I reluctantly went from a loved DII 4.6 V8 to a D3, the concerns disappeared very quickly, it can do everything the DII could but with more style and comfort (and its quicker and slightly less thirsty) well its chalk and cheese really. Still do all my own maintenance and repairs on the lane by the house and don't think its cost me any more to run than the old one.==================================
