Removing upper tailgate handle |
|
I tried to shift the torx screws that hold the upper tailgate handle in place a while back. They were really stiff, so I gave them a good blast with WD40 and left them for another day. Well the other day arrived (today) so I had another go. Three of them move, but one refuses to budge at all. Any ideas on what to do? I want to fit my reversing camera. The other three do turn, but they don't want to come out - I wonder if whatever they screw into is moving too? I've not seen a handle removed, so I don't know what to expect, but I'm getting nowhere at all if I can't shift the stuck one. Suggestions?

I think they screw into rivnuts which are notorious for turning when the screw is partially seized, you will need to get that one that won't shift loose first, and then wedge gently in the joint between handle and tailgate to try and remove the screws with a bit of pressure on, but obviously don't damage the paintwork etc.

As an alternative ease the handle away from the tailgate as you undo the screws the insert will come out of the handle you can then deal with getting the insert of the screw.once apart glue the insert back into the handle and refit using anti seize compound on the screws You're not afraid of the dark are you ?

As DN says you will have to try to put some pressure on the handle and turn the torx screw to get them out. Once you have the handle off you can put them in a vice to get them apart. I then used some Araldite to glue the insert back into the handle and then put a bit of copper grease on the screw, just in case I had to ever remove it again.

Yep, this happens all the time when I fit reverse cameras, it's rare that all four come out without having to unscrew the insert. Just make sure you have removed the three nuts so the whole handle can come off. Bodsys Brake Bible

Thanks for the advice guys. All four screws are well and truly welded to the rivnuts. I'll have to probably carefully grind them off and work out a way of locating it later on.
Camera is in, it just needs some power. The supplied video cable is too short, but I knew I'd need to extend it and do a bit of soldering to get it attached to the D4 screen.
