After a change in work, I'm now looking at 20,000 miles a year as opposed to 7,000... As a result, I might be selling my Disco3 XS - 57 plate. Its been well looked after and has had its big 70k service done with belts and pumps etc by Disco_Mikey.
I really don't want to sell and trying to convince SWMBO to part with the Fiat 500 to take on the D3... and ill trade the 500 for a mile muncher...
I'll keep you updated...
Cheers!

So... still procrastinating... reluctant to sell because i love my D3, but think it probably makes sense given my miles ill be doing...
However, considering: New Evoque, New Disco Sport... or hold of for the Fpace... Cant even get my head around all the pros and cons... paralysed by choice!
Im assuming that that the Disco 5 will be out with my price range and still a bit away...
what a dilemma!2007 XS, Leather Auto - Stornoway Grey

I'm just about the take on a Disco 4 to do 30-40,000 miles a year and you're worried about a piddling 20,000?!
And you're prepared to sit in an Evoque for 20,000 miles a year instead?
Definitely time to re-think that one 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4

if it's all about economy, then selling and replacing with a new car doesn't stack up, surely you will be
financing/paying for the new car. Assume the new car does twice the MPG, then the saving at current fuel prices will be aprox £1275.30.
So, you can get a new car for just under £1300 per year???
If you simply fancy a change, then so be it but you'll need a better excuse than economy.
all great points... hence the dilemma... not just economy, but having something new and shiny is appealing... of course 'perceived' reliability also. my disco is bought and paid for, so would need to finance... but with my fuel allowance based on millage I'd be able get a more economical model and pay the finance with the change (inc lower tax, no need for warranty, repairs outwith, breakdown, etc) , so cost would be neutral... so Id either be spending the same on old (and all that goes with it) or new...
She's done 88,000 (57 plate) and is in great condition... but maybe its just 'time'!
How does an evoque compare comfort wise to the D4 for munching the miles comfortable? @Red Merle

I've done around 130-140,000 miles between 3 Freelander 2's over the last 4 years and they've been great, though very different to the Disco. Truth be told, I'd be quite happy to carry on with FL2's as they are great at covering miles, I just want the extra space and I've inexplicably wanted a Disco for years!
I've only used Evoques for a few weeks while mine have been in for accident work. Do bear in mind that if getting into an FL2 after a Disco is virtually like getting back into a normal car, then the Evoque feels little different to getting into a 5 Series. Okay, it's not as bad as that and they will cover the miles with ease, but the proper driving position is so watered down as to be irrelevant and once you've got over the show-stopping looks, most of the over ornate design just starts to grate. Whether it's the terrible over the shoulder or reversing view out, the small windows, the gloomy interior, the tinny boot (complete with sill to lift things over and small opening), the space saver only spare or the inability to place any of the corners anymore, it all becomes one big PITA!
Spending so much time in my car, I love the Disco and FL2 for being practical workhorses. The Evoque is more like spending time with a glamorous date (I imagine! ); fun for an evening, but it's no basis for a long term relationship 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

I think I'm just going to need to test drive both and work my numbers

This. No better mile muncher than a Disco. The fuel cost and occasional repairs pale into insignificance compared with the cost of a new Evoque. And you'll hate it anyway, which means more cost to switch back to a Disco.

I've heard of people carrying out that ping pong before!
What shocked me is, despite the difference in the official figures, the difference in real world fuel consumption between an FL2 auto and a D4 SDV6 auto isn't that great and neither is there much difference between an FL2 and a 2.2D Evoque.
So, please don't assume that the fuel saving will be anywhere near what the government test figures would suggest. Take a long test drive in it and set the trip computer and go on those figures. The computer on the FL2 is pretty accurate, the Evoque may be similar and ANYTHING is more accurate than the official test results!
Assuming that your looking at a 4WD 2.2 auto, I'd suggest that you may only save around 6 mpg. I'm going to suggest fuel savings of only around £700 pa!
Looking forward to seeing how you get on on the test drive 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

My wife generously gave up her Tdi Golf and took over my D2 Td5 when I changed to a much farther commute. The Golf was great, doing 58 MPG, then we changed it to a Tdi 4motion Tiguan which is a lovely car to drive and does about 44 MPG, still got the D2 and looking on here for inspiration if I decide to upgrade it to a D3 (or 4 )2004 Discovery 2 Td5 Landmark
