My new Discovery 3
As I mentioned in a previous thread I powdering between the FFRR TD6 which I've owned for over a year or a Discovery 3 - Well, I purchased the Discovery and have put the TD6 up for sale.
I bought the discovery at a good price, however it has numerous faults which need fixing.
First however, here she is.
She is a 2005 TDV6 SE with 100,000 miles. However, it has not been maintained in the last year and therefore has numerous faults, some major. First and foremost.
1/ The Speedo is not working. It does not register an increase in speed. I plugged in my handheld diagnostics unit and it informs me the left front ABS unit is malfunctioning. Perhaps this is the cause? This effects the Hill Decent control, which is also not working.
2/The car has limited power. The gears etc change perfect, as does the engine however, when one wants to accelerate it is very limited. Could this be the EGR Valve, I'm also getting a turbo pressure error. Would either of these cause this issue?
3/ Suspension - don't get me started on this. The previous owner replaced the air with a cheap coil conversion, don't even think they are proper land rover. This causes the rear to ride extremely high. Apart from looking unwell, I don't like not having error as this seems to effect every other system on the car. plus, it's not now good for off-roading with the various heights it is at.
4/ Tyres - I need four new tyres.
This is the suspension strut. What are the wires on show? Doubt they should be like that.
Apart from this all is well. Until I discover more issues. I think that's why its call Discovery.

I understand buying coiler but replacing AES with coils thats loads of work and car can be meesed up beyond recognition
hope you will be able to sort it al out cheaply
did you get all the kit old owner taken out like dampers compressor, air tank and all back with the car?
regarding point 2 - check intercooler hoses for splits might be very cheapo fix

Don't talk to me about it! I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would do that. It's completely alien to me, what is worse is to undertake this but not even do it correctly!
When you says dampers do you mean Air Struts? I checked underneath and all the height sensors and airlines seem to be intact, which is a good start.
Where is the compressor located on the Disco. I imagine the Air Susp ECU is still in place, all though I have not looked.
The Disco is going to take abit of time and effort to get right, however when all is said and done I hope and think she should be good. It's never towed or been used for rough work if it's any consolation.
What are people's thoughts on the ABS. Would the speed sensor in the front left wheel cause this not to work?

Compressor is located in front of the rear left wheel arch, good luck
Looks like the Dobinson's 45cm lift kit that is sold for the Discovery 3 as the springs are the same color and that’s a Dobinson's trade mark. You can buy kits to replace the air suspension the come with some sort of computer blanking thing.

So I spent today replacing each of the 4 springs with the replacement air springs.
Bad and good news/ along with shocking news.
Good News First! I got all of the four old shocks out and the new air springs in. I had to use some Scania lorry air suspension connectors to get everything to go together, as the previous owner had just cut the air lines.
Shocking News Next: The old springs, if i'd call them that are not a part purchased off shelf. They are home made out of the old air springs. I noticed the airlines at the top of each of them. Upon closer inspection realised that that the old springs were just cut in half. A coil put in the middle and it all welded together. Shocking! I also notice they are not in line and are bent.
Bad News: Upon activating the car and clearing the fault codes, it keeps going into fault and shutting down within maybe 3-5 seconds and makes no attempt to raise. Infact the compressor does not run - so in answer to the previous posters question, yes the compressor is in the place.
Where would you guys look to first, in order to get the compressor running?
The fault codes are saying compressor circuit? Whatever this means? What fuses should I check?
Really appreciate the advice on this forum. It's making this job much easier - slowly but surely this Land Rover is going back together! Also, thanks for the advice thus far!

So I'm trying to work out what is at fault. I'm wondering is it the Compressor or perhaps a sensor or wiring issue.
Would a compressor which does not start cause the car to go into fault mode immediately or would it take a minute or two.
Is there anyway I can jump a compressor via a relay? If so and which one? This would test whether the compressor is faulty (Not Starting) or running or broken (Running and no pressure - which would be a separate issue).

Cheers - I've been hearing a-lot of talk about being brave over the past few days and tackling a land rover with a few issues is certainly that!!

Yes but a simple test is just to use a suitably thick jumper wire direct to the compressor to see if it runs.
About now is a good time to fill in your vehicle profile - if you want help that is.

Home made springs.....Jeeeez ......Is the relay and a large amperage fuse in place and intact in eng bay fuse box ? Sorry I can't remember which ones, and I am miles away from my D3 at the mo. There is a guide diagram on underside of fuse box lid.
