IIRC, if you coast downhill in neutral, you actually use more fuel than you do in gear - the fuel is shut off in gear, but needs to be used to keep the engine running in neutral.There are two rules for success,
1. Never tell everything you know.

Swings & roundabouts. In N you're still using a little juice but with engine braking no fuel burn but need to use throttle earlier coz less speed picked up for going up hill.
Just remember that 20 miles range going uphill changes instantly to 0 miles when going downhill. Not good if it's the pass going into Andorra and all the petrol stations are closed coz it's night. Thank the gods for automats.
