Better than 30mpg
I didn't think it could be done, but I actually managed nearly 32mpg over a 50+ mile round trip yesterday - on A roads as well, no motorways or dual carriageways. It was a challenge, never more than a feather touch on the throttle, keep the revs below 2000, max speed 50mph, aircon off.

What was that in reality? 32mpg on the trip comp could be anything from 27 - 30mpg in real numbers, it's not called the lie-o-meter for nothing. Best I've achieved is 36.1mpg over 350 miles, top to top and on a hot (over 30c) day.

Last fill up - just before this journey - showed a fuel consumption of 22.1mpg. This correlated with an actual consumption on my fuelly.com record of 22.29mpg. Other fill ups seem to be of similar correlation.
Actually, there is something unusaul about my D3. It's the only vehicle I have ever owned which has accurately shown my speed, cross referenced with GPS and roadside speed signs. When it reads 30mph, that's what I'm doing. All my other cars have shown an overspeed indication of 7-10%, i.e. speedo reads 70mph, actual speed is 65mph.There are two rules for success,

I average 28 using my spreadsheet, about 2mpg less than the "lie-o-meter' states
My D3 matches GPS as well, also the first ever car that does this - I notice in 50mph speed zones on the motorway, I'm overtaking people who think they are doing 50 Iggy/Ieuan

It's odd, isn't it. My feeling is that most manufacturers quite understandably specify their speedo to read slightly over. Can you imagine the furore if a large number of drivers were prosecuted because one manufacturer had a batch of speedos which under-read slighty? The legal profession would all be ordering their D5s on the prospect of the fat fees they were about to make. There are two rules for success,

If it were traced back to the manufacturer then it'd be them in trouble. Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

By law speedos must never read less than than true speed the car is travelling at and can over read by as much as 10%. And because they measure rotation times circumference of the tyres rather than actual distance travelled then manufacturers always set speedos to read over to allow for small variations in tyre manufacturing, tyre pressure and air pressure etc. Where It all goes wrong is if you change tyre sizes!==================================

Not quite the 30mpg but in all fairness I was giving it the berries, motorway and twisty A roads.
So I'm happy with this average speed

On fortunately. AC wasn't working and car was 38c inside, good job the seat covers are waterproof as the sweat was pouring off me. Mpg figured was trashed by the climb up to Andorra where luckily the LR dealer could regas the AC.
