My New Toy - 54 Plate HSE....
Morning Chaps,
I've been a member of the forum for about three years, and have only just taken the plunge and bought a one owner 54 plate HSE with most of its service history and 114k on the clock. I had a long chat with the owner who had largely looked after the car, and this was reflected in the service book and the paperwork I got with it.
So off I went out west to see/purchase it, and saw evidence that all the brakes, bushes and other running gear had been done, and his indie garage told him the next service was belts time. Now obviously I'm new to the marque, but even I know they're due at 105k/7 years, and hey guess what that service is the one missing from the book. It appears this guy was merely taking the advice of his indie, and given the fact he's replaced all the tyres with new Pirelli Scorpions, done all the running gear, car spotless and average mileage, price reflected the cambelt requirement, I went for it.
While driving back, I filled up, or rather overfilled and the rodent nibbling breather issue manifested itself at the M4 services. Ok I thought, this can't have just happened, but having said that I've never really been one for topping my car right up, and this was my first fill so I didn't know how much the fill up would turn out to be. Previous owner obviously denied he knew anything about it, but then so would I! Anyway, that stopped, and was put on the list as the first job. This brilliant forum has helped with that, thanks.
So, then I get back and the bleeding boot cable goes... Rites of passage and all that, that's fixed. If dealers want to charge £300 to sort that out I really am in the wrong game, it was so easy.
So, back to the belts. I asked a couple of people, and got some prices from locals in North London where I work and also from Marshalls Halesworth (until recently was Hammonds who were recommended to me for their reputation), and the indies came in anywhere from £880-1400, while the dealer has come in at £730 for both belts, tensioners and crank bolt, plus, and this is my query, with the high pressure injector pump belt at the same time, what's that all about? They want the car for the day, and I get a courtesy vehicle in the meantime - fair?
Reading elsewhere, I was wondering if I should add the oil pump at the same time, whether to have it checked or replaced? I can't find any evidence in the service history to say if it's been done or not... Thoughts anyone?
I'm so happy with the car, and fully accept I'll have things to do on it. The guy did look after it in the main.....
I'd appreciate any thoughts or observations, cheers all,
Mike

Firstly Welcome
Secondly, without any photographs your purchase never happened
As for the belts, I‘m sure that some of the forum sponsors can much better the price you‘ve been quoted, I had mine done with a local member for a significantly lower price including what I paid for parts, this also included the pump - I got all the parts from AF first.
Looking forward to seeing the pics Iggy/Ieuan

Thanks! I've added one for reality purposes...
Regarding the impending job, I asked around a lot, and I've ended up at the dealer almost because it's pretty convenient, and can accommodate quickly. If anyone in the north London, Suffolk, Norfolk area can help, I'd happily rearrange...
Ta,
Mike

Hi Mike
The cost of the pull down is the major component as belts are cheap so, in your shoes (was recently) I'd get them to put a new oil and water pump on as they don't last forever.
Maybe a little too much preventative maintenance but worth doing for the sake of maybe £80 in parts.

Thanks for the tip. Just spoke to the dealer who's doing the belts, and they said an extra £893! Is this right or should I leave for service time in November?

£893 for supplying and fitting an oil pump and water pump is a rip off considering they have already taken the front to bits to replace the belts and pulleys, minimal additional work involved, maybe 10 minutes max.
