Unburnt fuel leaking past the cylinders may not damage them; indeed on DPF equipped vehicles a small amount of unburnt fuel will leak past the pistons and into the sump during a regeneration. On the D4 if the amount of diesel added to the oil volume becomes a concern the vehicle will trigger a service message to the driver.
The engine would need a detailed inspection from a specialist to determine the actual cause of failure in this case, but injector issues are not unheard of.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Right, now engine rebuilder claims FIVE out of SIX injectors were faulty, causing erratic running and this snapped crankshaft.
Are there any experts out there who can confirm if this is possible or is this Bullsh*t?
My friend faces another four figure bill for a SECOND engine rebuild. I smell a rat personally....
There are a few of points that spring to mind on this. Erratic running shouldn't snap a crank, end of. A failed crank damper can cause crank failure though. It is possible to have a faulty injector leak fuel into the engine oil after shut down. However this comes with visible symptoms. There would be a degree of knock when the engine was started. There would also be a momentary puff of white smoke at startup too. There needs to be a lot of diesel in the oil for serious lubrication issues to arise. Diesel, being an oil is actually a lubricant. This is how the HP diesel pumps in many modern common rail engines is lubricated. Ok diesel doesn't have the load carrying ability of A1 or B3/4 but mixed with them it should be ok. If 5 injectors were leaking down at shut down, the oil level would have noticeably risen long before the bottom end would have failed. However with 5 leaking injectors, I'm surprised it started at all, even if it did start ok there would be a plume of smoke to alert the driver.
To me it sounds like something was wrong when they put the engine back together. The block could well be out of line, having already suffered a crank failure. An independent inspection would be needed to prove bad workmanship. It would be easier to find a reasonable milage replacement unit.Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

Thanks for your comments guys. I feel so sorry for my mate. I've forwarded him a link to your comments & advised him to find a good independent engineer to do a report.

A second hand lump is normally better than a "recon" unit which normally uses a twisted block. So many rebuilders just drop a crank and bearings in an call it a day. I'm yet to see a reliable rebuild option for these engines, they rarely make it over the 50k mark after a rebuild. My specialist also looked into rebuilds and advised not to bother.

A good engine builder will check the block before they rebuild it, they would also thoroghly clean it and check oilways for blockages.
I rebuild engines and i can assure you they are good for more than 50k
