Buying, driving and shipping car back from America

Hi all, I'm well into my American 50's,60's and 70's cars at the minute and cant get enough of all the shows in the UK that buy do up and flip cars.

So it got me thinking. Would it be feasible to fly to America, buy and insure a said car. Then travel turning it into a holiday before driving it to the shipping yard and having it shipped back to blighty.

I would imagine that trying to get insurance would be my stumbling point.

What do you reckon?

Cheers

I think insurance not impossible but may need a US address, possibly a hotel address would be OK.

Don't all flame me, but you might try pinging off an email to wheeler dealers implying they sparked an interest in this and ask them for advice

I believe you'll get stung on import duties, and probably VAT. I lived and worked in the US in the late 90's, and brought our cars back with us. If memory serves me correctly, we had to prove we lived in the US, and prove 6 months insurance cover. If the car is over 3 years old it just needed an MOT. But our newer one needed type approval or something like that. It had to go through a different type of test. We had to have orange indicators etc. added.

All I can advise is do your homework so you don't get stung.

John

Importing is relatively easy just be ready to pay the tax, VAT, Shipping, Insurance and then cost of converting lights etc and getting the car through the SVA test (or current equivalent).

I have done 5 or 6 over the years and its fun but selling takes a loooooong time.

Your biggest issue is getting insurance if you want to drive it in the USA.
