Oil pump failure...

Fitted a replacement engine 2 weeks ago. Broken crank, pictures were posted.

Anyway, new belts, oil + filter etc, all replaced before fitting, as per usual.
Customer was trying to keep costs down, as the car is being traded in 6 months time for a D4.

Engine went in, started first turn of the key, and I drove it the 25 miles home, absolutely spot on.
Did a few short trips in it, just to make sure everything was OK. No dramas

Customer came to collect it (from York, I may add!) on Saturday afternoon. Put a few miles on it before he took it away. Driving as you would expect. Switched it off, and disabled his speedlocking for him.

Last check of the levels, wished him well, and he drove off.
30 seconds later, there was a knock at the door. Engine oil light not going out, and sounding very rattly...

Swapped the pressure sensor, just in case. No difference.

Took the oil filter out, disabled the engine and cranked it over. No oil coming up to the filter housing
Took my own oil filter out, just to check. Loads of oil!

Double Censored

Dropped the sump, just to make sure the pick-up pipe was OK (which it was)

A quick look through GTR, and confirmed the pressure relief valve is in the oil pump housing. Took a new pump to bits, to see how it all worked.

Decided to take the original pump off, and check it out. Just to eliminate a pump issue.
Upon removal...

PRV stuck open...

Started the car with a new pump, rattled as per normal for a few seconds until pressure was built. And the light went out!
TFFT!

Done another few miles, with no issues, wished him well again, and off he went.
Reversed out the driveway, warning light came on again.

Big Cry

Didnt sound rattly this time, so swapped the pressure sensor back again to the replacement engines original

Light went out, and it didn't come back on Thumbs Up

Ended up being a very late Saturday night, but the customer got his car home just fine 8)

Moral of the story? I'll be fitting a new pump from now on Whistle

Nicely spotted Mike. I've had piston type PRVs stick open due to contamination of the bore due to black sludge. The reason I believe is as follows. Starting engine from cold with fresh oil gives a nice high oil pressure. This pushes the piston out a little further than the old oil had and into sludge built up in the PRV bore. This is when the pistol sticks. As the engine warms up, the pressure drops enough for the light to eliminate and give that destintive low pressure rattle. Sometimes the PRV piston returns to its closed position when the engine cools, sometimes not. I prefer poppet valve PRVs but not many manufacturers use them any more.
Luckily you caught it before the engine seized. Thumbs Up
