Holiday car problems, advice needed

Hello, I am new to this forum and this is my first post, sorry it such a long one!
I have just returned from France having had problems with my Discovery 3 whilst away and would like some advice.
My drivers side wheel bearing failed completely about 5 miles from my destination (close to Calais) whilst towing a caravan, I managed to limp to the caravan site and called my European breakdown service, they recovered the vehicle and took it to a nearby garage (which I later found out was a Renault garage) for repair. They took a week to complete the repair because I was told by my breakdown service that firstly they had been sent the wrong part, then it took another two days for them to get the right part. On collecting the car and paying the bill the invoice states the part they fitted was LR048083 which on searching the internet appears to be the wheel hub/bearing kit for a Discovery 4, when entering details of my 2008 Discovery 3 on parts websites it comes up that I need part no. LR014147, so my first question is, is this part compatible/safe to remain on my car ?
Secondly in the week running up to the wheel bearing failure, I noticed an intermittent grinding noise from the front drivers side wheel, this came and went and I thought I would have it checked out when I returned home; around this time I had multiple warning messages on the dash and car going into limp home mode every few minutes, this happened several days running including whilst towing the caravan, which required the car and caravan being recovered and the car taken to a local French garage, they used the diagnostics and tested the alternator and battery and reported no faults. Following this I towed my caravan back to North of France, about 500 miles and it was the last part of this journey when the wheel bearing failed on the motorway, all through this journey over two days I did not get the warning lights or limp home mode. After collecting the car from the garage following the wheel bearing replacement I drove back to the campsite (about 20 miles) with no problems. The next morning I started to tow the caravan to Calais (about 25 miles) and half way there all the numerous warning messages appeared and car went into limp home mode, it did this about 6 times in the last 12 miles. Managed to get on the ferry and off at Dover where I called the RAC, breakdown service arrived and did diagnostics which came up with numerous codes, he cleared these and followed me for about 10 miles and car was ok, so decided to carefully drive the 60 miles back home, got home without any warning messages or limp home mode. So after a long explanation, my question is, could the warning messages and limp home mode be related the wheel bearing problem, it seems more than a coincidence that after the work on the front wheel the warning messages and limp home mode reappeared.
The problems with the Discovery this holiday and the stress it has caused and the money it has cost has me seriously questioning whether to get rid, which would be a shame because it is a great car and fantastic towing the caravan.

Front wheel bearing wouldn't normally cause cascade faults unless it's damaged the ABS sensor.

Before you start there though, a) make sure your battery terminals are tight.

b) get a helper to check your brake/tail light bulbs. If one is not working on either brake or taillight function, replace it, they can and do cause this sort of fault.

c) the brake light switch also causes these sorts of issues. Easy and cheap to replace. If the old one is good, keep it as a spare.

d) after those, have the codes read - a dodgy wheel speed sensor, high pressure fuel pump, wiring problem etc can all cause issues. These are fickle cars!

Let us know how you go. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the reply Rich. To cut down on the length of my post I omitted a few details:

When I first had the warning lights and limp home mode I checked the internet and particularly this forum and I addressed the most common issues to cause this problem:

I bought a new battery, and checked the terminals were tight
I checked the brake light bulbs, all working.
I bought a new brake light switch at a Land rover dealers in France and fitted it
I think I need to take it to my local independent Land Rover specialists to check speed sensors and wiring etc. along with checking the passenger side front wheel bearing.

If it was me i would start from reading the error codes after the car goes into limp mode or dash lights up. I had my passenger side wheel hub replaced too at 55000 miles, but before it failed luckily .

Hi there. First, as said, fill out your profile so we know what year, and trim level car you have.

You have already changed the cheap options, ie bulbs and switch which can cause intermittent faults. Also possibly could have been a fault on the tow electrics?

You have not changed your fuel filter, as low fuel pressure can cause similar symptoms, especially when the car is working hard. High temperatures are also another parameter that could make a marginal problem in the UK without a caravan in tow, a major problem in a hot country towing a heavy load for long distances.

Rather than stabbing in the dark, you need to get a proper code read done after its failed again. If the codes are cleared, the evidence is gone.

Check all intercooler pipes and the intercooler itself for splits, oil stains, any sign of a leak.

Check the turbo linkage for full and free operation.

Take the car out for a good thrashing and see if you make it fault, then get the codes read.

There is a good car in there somewhere, just needs a methodical diagnosis.

I completed my profile when registering but it doesn't seem to be showing. I have a Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE bought from new in Oct 2008, it has done 93,000 miles. I live between Reigate and Banstead in Surrey and take my car to AJS nearby for servicing and repairs.
The warning messages and limp home mode first appeared whilst not towing, the faults does seem to happen when the engine is warm about 20 minutes from first setting out.
I will follow your advice and try to get the fault to occur again then take it to AJS to get the codes read and hopefully sorted.
