Hi all
New to the site and about to buy a Disco 3 but I want a little advise.
Its an 05 hse with all the extras, full service history and has done 99000 miles. A real nice example, color coded bumpers and chrome grill.
Asked the dealer about the cam belts and he doesn't believe they have been changed but offered to do the main one in with the price. He reckons the rear one is not recommended until it fails(I know LR do recommend it) and I know it wont cause engine damage if it fails.
So the question is should I get the car and leave the rear belt or get the car and have the rear belt changed at my expense and if I do will it be a lot cheaper to just get the rear one changed?(I know this is the awkward one thanks to these forums). Any advice is welcome, thanks in advance.

I would tell the dealer to just get the rear belt done or no sale. Yeah it's awkward but while there in there they might as well do it as well. I'd also want to know if they are doing the oil pump casing and the water pump.
Welcome along by the way

Great cars by the way.
I did notice when I was looking for mine just how many had 99k on the clock! I have noticed this with other makes top end cars as well.
As for the belts if you can do them yourself do so as there other parts thats are well worth changing when you are in there.

Hi Andy
Thanks for the quick reply, I have asked and they are only willing to do the front one. They won't have trouble selling the car so I don't think they will budge.
Assuming they did agree, how would I know they had actually done it? If I'm right you can't actually see the rear belt.
Any idea how much it would cost to just replace the rear?

If they won't tackle the rear belt then I'm not sure I'd be happy letting them have a go at the cam belt, after all they don't sound very proficient do they.

Not a case of them lacking proficiency, more a case of not wanting to do more work at no additional cost to me. They are agreeing to replace the main beltvat no extra cost to the listed price.
Should I just get them to discount £500 or so and get both done myself?

If you are happy with their know how then I would get them to do it before you take ownership as it's a couple of years overdue. As you say, the rear belt won't kill the engine so you have time to consider your options. I did my own belts and while the rear belt is fiddly to say the least it was less stressful than the front because you know you can't wreck the engine.

Ok, so I went to view the car today and decided against it, all shiny on the outside but grubby on the inside and rusty on the underside.
Guess its back to trawling autotrader.
