Daft question but was the park brake on? Shouldn't that have held it?
and being an auto was it not in Park?
Park can't hold it once the driveshaft is disconnected, since the rear TF box output can then spin freely - IOW, exactly what happened. The EPB would have though.
I must be having a dull day as I don't understand why the vehicle moved.
Even with the rear prop disconnected why did the EPB not hold it?
If the EPB failed (or was not applied) why would the vehicle move with Park selected?
A school day for Robbie no doubt.

Maybe I'm being naive here, but if your vehicle is in 'park', you only lock the transmission (the gearbox) so the braking effect is from the gearbox via the propshaft to the back axle. If you disconnect the prop you have no braking effect. I stand to be corrected!
We all make stupid mistakes. I fitted the top hose elbow U - clip incorrectly and went for a couple of weeks before it blew off and emptied the cooling system. DOH!!
Absolutely delighted to hear that you are on the mend (Dalek?) and that the Disco is not damaged. Only joking. Get well soon, you have my best wishes.2007 Disco3 2.7 tdv6 SE

A standard diff allows the two output shafts to rotate in opposite directions when the input shaft is held in place - the matematical equation being A = B + C, with A being the input. By locking the input to the diff (transfer box, in this case), the outputs (i.e. front and rear wheels) can only turn in opposite directions by spinning the pinions - when A is fixed, B can only be the inverse of C. Disconnect one, however, and the other is free to turn either way.Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

I'm still a bit loss, so type with care and sympathy!
The gearbox is locked by the locking pawl preventing rotation of the output shaft and anything connected to it. In this condition just how does the front prop shaft still rotate allowing both front wheels to rotate forward or are you saying the centre diff reverses the rotation from the front even when the output shaft is locked?

The crownwheel is fixed, but the two planetary gears (labelled "side gears") are able to rotate in opposite directions allowing the driveshafts to do the same. (Obviously, the TF box uses an epicyclic arrangement but the function is the same.) This lesson in mechanics is going to give DALEK a headache to distract from his rib-ache.
Well at least he's completed the practical part... Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC
