Cold starting problem

2007 tdv6 Disco - needs atleast 3 heats in the morning, to start first time, otherwise turns over for 4/5 seconds before starting, once started will start first yime all day long until it gets cold again? My thoughts are glow plugs but everywhere i read say they all snap when changing?

Is the battery in good condition?
Yes they are notorious for glow plugs seizing in the heads so backup plan required.

Many folk will fit a timer to run the fbh as an engine pre heat to avood changing weak glow plugs Thumbs Up

Robbie has one of his excellent write ups on how to check glow plugs here

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic130145....sting+glow

Towards the end he recommends persevering and replacing them rather than going down the FBH timer route and having just replaced all 6 of mine and noticed a distinct improvement in the low speed acceleration when the engine is cold I would second that recommendation. It has not really been cold enough yet to know whether it starts better.

I put some notes on how I got mine out without breaking them on this thread.

Good luck with whichever option you choose.

Could also be an injector problem.
Effects lots of makes of cars when 1 or more injectors bleeds off to much fuel so fuel pressure cannot get high enough to start.
A decent diagnosis tool will show you fuel rail pressure
If you put up your location there may be a member near by with said tool.

Have a look here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261682019689
So far I have not used my glow plugs at all crank ign and it starts straight away.
I reckon you need to plug in a diag tool first

Why would you disconnect your glow plugs?

Unless you mean everything is still connected and you are just not pausing, in which case the plugs are still being commanded on and actively being used.

Thumbs Up

Low rail pressure may not log as a fault but you should be able to see the pressure with diag kit.

Sad fact of the day the td5 engine only has 4 glow plugs Mr. Green

Both engines should really start happily without glow plugs unless its sub zero
