MY08 D3 runnings costs v‘s D4 with 2 yr wty?

My 2008 SE has seen me spend on average £350+ a month just on repairs, tax, ins etc, this is on top of fuel:

Tax & Ins costs around £800, so £60ish a month, all the rest is repairs (& Tyres)........I also have an oil leak and I‘ve started noticing that the Disco is dropping overnight as well. On top of this, I think I will need to spend money on a few other areas and so another big dent in my wallet.....so I‘m in a bit of a quandary Sad

Do I chop her in and get something that comes with a decent warranty and is newer, and is cheaper to run?

Please don‘t laugh, but I‘m test driving a 2013 ML 2.5 Blusomething or other on Friday Shocked but just to see what it‘s like Whistle ...£190 a year tax, 40ish MPG and I can get it on a PCP for around £250 a month - much less than the £300 or so I‘m paying now just in repair work

There‘s always a D4, of course this would come with 2yr wty if purchased from LR, the lower tax rate ones are within the last two years I think, but the prices are high and much more than the £250 that I could get for the ML

What do you all think? This is probably a ‘Iguana‘ panic moment again, but I‘m trying to be logical here and perhaps cutting my losses before I have to pay out again

Hard hat on and ready for your feedback Laughing

Hats off to you for keeping such detailed costings!

I would suspect that the figure of 40 mpg could be taken about as seriously as the 35 mpg figure that LR publish under the laughable government mandated test procedure Laughing

Of course, you may choose to take a German manufacturer's test claims with the respect they obviously deserve! Whistle

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the Mercedes Benz PCP plans are of the "no purchase option" variety, meaning that you will never own the car you're paying for (and you'll never see anything back when you hand it back to the dealer at the end of the lease).

I wouldn't touch a Mercedes with a barge pole, after sales service is terrible unless you are a professional footballer.
If you want economical and reliable motoring look at a Freelander2, rated as the most reliable vehicle LR have made or stick with what you've got.

Cheers Thumbs Up

I've found a pcp finance supplier, independent from Mercedes or LR and at a much better % Thumbs Up

Too be honest not that serious for the Mercedes, but want to see what it's like but will PM Rob, thanks for that.

I spent a long time going through LR site & Auto trader last night, not that much around at the moment, did look at Freelancers as well.

Is everything covered by LR 2 year warranty and does it also have to be serviced by LR?

SWMBO also given go-ahead (sort of Whistle )

Bad time of year to be looking at changing, I suppose. Rolling Eyes

4x4s will always attract a premium in the winter (which works both ways, of course) but I guess it also means stock is low.

At the end of the day, there's nothing on your car that cannot be repaired; It's all just lumps of metal/electronics held together with nuts and bolts and cables.

I keep looking on Autotrader as well but can't justify taking out finance to fund a D4 when I already have a D3 that does everything I need. Sure, a four year old D4 HSE would be a wonderful upgrade to my 8.5 year old manual D3 S. But is it £30k worth of an upgrade? No way.

Head vs Heart !

If I followed my head, I would buy a new Korean 4x4 with a 7 year warranty. A colleague has a Santa Fe and to be honest, its a good car. Ok, not got the quality feel of the Disco, but very functional and totally reliable.

Iggy, nobody here wants to see charts like that! It really does get you thinking though.

I was in the same boat, drove a 530 estate, E350, Ml and X5, for my budget I could get something much newer than a D4 but they were soulless if your into your Landrovers.
All good motors but nowhere near as versatile for my needs (fishing wagon, boat tug, dog carrier, van, camping vehicle, and kiddy swallower!).
In the end purchased a 11my D4 HSE sdv6 with average mileage and a years warranty and pleased with my choice.
I'm sure the social gatherings on the Santa Fe forum are about as appealing as pouring acid down your japs eye Gareth!.
Met some great people during my disco ownership over the last 8 years, didn't want to leave the fold and lose contact, even though I'm not as active on the forum as I once was.
