Loosing Coolant
Hi all
So the fun on the D3 starts here!
Ive read a lot of threads and wasn't sure to comment on all or pull bits and put them here.
My coolant is going down, I spotted it around 12 miles away and it was empty, I have put a pic below of levels:
First level is where I topped it up to on Saturday (with water as sadly nothing else)
Second level is where it was after a few hours, 12 miles later it hasn't moved until today where it is now.
Now I have read many a post and found Robbies Bleeding guide.
Its a 2005 with 170,000 miles on.
Ive seen suggestions for a new reservoir, My cap on expansion tank doesn't have any form of seal, is this normal?
Ive seen a lot about EGR Coolers
Should add that oil looks OK, no loss of power, temperature doesn't rise either so im ruling out head gasket etc.
There is nothing untoward in the expansion bottle either.
Wondered if anyone is aware of anything age related before we start at it working our way around
Should add the pipes seem soft as if they are not pressurised?

To check the level you are meant to do it at the front, lower down.
There are 2 lines and COLD.
Marked.
It’s meant to be. Betweeen the lines.
Dud a dash message start this? They lie a lot.
It’s fine for that chamber u marked to be empty.

Can you smell, a hot / burnt coolant smell?
If so, check the water manifold, at front top of engine, this is known,
to crack and leak coolant

apart from the obvious, check all coolant pipes you should check:
1. inlet manifold, easy to see
2. block inlet, LHD difficult to see you can look from the wheel arch once you remove the shields
3. water pump.
best is to check if you can smell coolant, remove the under guard and see if it drips there and from there try to locate. Problem is that it has many plastic parts and they do age so need replacement.

A friend of mine had a similar issue, the radiator has a gearbox cooler in it too, and the coolant was leaking into the gearbox, so worth checking this out if nothing obvious.

Suffered from loss of coolant a good while back when I had the D3.
No identifiable fluid leaks on the pipes, nor leaking onto the ground
My issue turned out to be the EGR cooler.
Coolant was entering there and evaporating.I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

That's why you need to look nearer the front.
They are separate chambers

Thanks
So figured out that it’s now too full and it’s probably the sensor.

Jack, have you sorted your loss of coolant in the end?
