to sell or not
hey all
ok, so my D5 HSE is coming up to its 3rd birthday and its £400 service and MOT etc etc
SO, ive had no probs with the car and rearly quite like it still, done 25k miles black with black pack etc etc and love the way it looks too !!!
So costing it out,
service £485 (3rd minor) (lookers Colchester) does that sound a bit much ???
MOT £67
It will probably need some tyres soon
extended 12month warranty £855
Whilst not millions I was wondering whether to change it or not (new RRS or new D4) as obviously it is still depreciating so the offset of that to compared to the change etc etc etc just wondering what most people do... not sure what mines worth tbh....
any advice appreciated fellas

Whatever happens it's out of warranty, but it's also taken the blunt end of the depreciation. New cars only work out being cost effective if you keep them for 5yrs +. You've already said you like the car, so you have to weigh up in your mind if you want to take another hit on depreciation on a new one, or risk it for a biscuit and pay for any out of warranty bills. Another 2yrs depreciation will even out the cost of the car over its life IMO, its very expensive buying cars like these every 3 years but then again if you can afford it go for it..

cheers for that, I see what you mean... I can extend the warranty for £855 which is probably what I will end up doing....

£855 is easily swallowed up by one dicky part on these cars, I'd pay that any day for a bit of piece of mind for 2yrs.
If its a HSE I'm going to stab it was a circa £55k car, with average miles @ 5 years old its still going to be worth £25k privately (more accessible to private buyers at this price, so don't trade in), £30k depreciation over 5 years = £6k/year.
Take the same car and chop it in for a new one @ year 3 and I reckon you're looking at getting £28k on a good day, so £27k depreciation = £9k per year. That figure could even be less depending on the dealer!
Add in the £835 warranty, a new set of boots and a service and keeping hold of it for another 2 years will save you in the region of £7k, hardly buttons.
All my figures are rough estimates, but having been through eh whole buying new vs nearly new for the business with my commercial Ive made spreadsheets and all sorts with running costs. For me and the business, right now, it makes more sense to buy a new one every 4 years. For private owners its slightly different.
All this is subjective though, if you've got money to burn (which a lot of people on this site seem to have) then its not an issue, but seeing as you posted the question I sense you are looking for the more economically viable solution.

Your figures including the purchase price is just about bang on !
its weird, I have the whole I would like a new car thing in head and the other is saying you have a very nice car as it is lol....
basically had with trade ins and cash I put £20k over 3 years and have been happy enough with the repayment.... that's why I wondered if I just carried on paying and stepped to a new car (well hopefully with the value left in the D4) ....
maybe i should have a bit more of a think about it....

Im 32 believe it or not, but believe me I learned the hard way when I bought a brand new 4 series and decided to get rid of it after 3 months... That was what you call a harsh lesson in finance.

Guess it depends how much you want to stay in a D4 as it ends production later this year, D5 will be a step up price wise.

I'm a fan of bangernomics! While yours is hardly a banger - had it three years, no probs with the car - the bulk of the depreciation has now been and gone. If it was me I'd keep it. Even if I'd just won the lottery I'd keep it!

I think you should be looking to get nearer £30K plus some, just part ex'd my 3 year 3 month old, 32000 miles and got £30K. Contact Gary Elliot, he made me a great offer before christmas but my dealer has almost matched it and I got some extras for trading it in as they wanted it

Buy a new one only if that's what you'd really like; as others have said, there's no real financial case for doing so. Personally, for the low mileage that you're doing, I'd take the risk rather than pay for a year's warranty.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

The Government sets the maximum price for MOT tests. Currently it is set at £54.85 for cars

I kept my 2006 D3 HSE for a little over 6 years. I bought it new with a few extras for £38k, sold it to a mate in the trade for £10,500. I bought two LR warranties and a Warranty Direct one.
What I will say, is that if your 2013 D4 is a good one, keep hold of it. My MY14 was a nightmare and I've got a big problem with the brakes on my MY15. My MY10 was totally faultless.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I've got the same thoughts. My 2013 D4 HSE will be 3 years old in August, so far it's been a great, faultless car albeit with the high RFL, but I missed the 20" wheels and the stop start / ad blue malarkey.
I'm thinking to keep it for another year at least and this will cost me roughly £500 RFL, £600 tyres, £1000 LR extended warranty (still with restrictions I understand), £120 road side assist, the 3 year service is covered as part of the plan I have and the MOT will be £50 or so. Probably another £300 - £400 for brake disks / pads I guess. Current mileage is 30k and I'll do another 18 or so before it is 4 years old. Sensible thing to do is to keep it as it does all I want and no issues so far, and see what's available come late spring / summer 2017.
I don't fancy a run out model really given the prices, lack of colour choices and imminent arrival of the D5. However I may change my mind on this if I pop into the dealer and see one / get some figures, using the £2500 or so above as part of the deposit
