Just brought a Disco 3 with air suspension. Towed the caravan for the first time and not very impressed. The car was very bouncy giving the impression of being in a boat in a very rough sea. Has anybody else had similar issues, is this the norm. Any advice or ideas would be greatly received.

Russell,
It couldn't be more the opposite. Having towed with a D1, D2 and now D3 it is by far the best towcar I have owned. We tow a twin axle 1900kg caravan and it is a perfect ride.
Sounds to me like a problem, is the correct suspension software download installed ?? D4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

Never had a problem with single or twin axled vans, steady as a rock. I assume your nose weight is correct? DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Nose weight can be a huge factor but the air suspension more than copes D4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

Check that your tyres are load rated 112 or above, I have come across several Discoveries that have been fitted with car type tyres. One I drove handled okay solo ut with a trailer it was lethal. Also check that the balance weights can swing free or that the trailer wiring has not snaged one.

Agree with the above, no 'boat' feeling at all when towing our TA, in fact, SWMBO can go to sleep in the back, not like our last 4x4

I have to agree with all said. I tow and Elddis Crusader Sirocco and it tows perfectly. There is always a little bit of bump and thump from a twin axle, but the D3 keeps it all under control.
How much nose weight were you towing with?

No Probs at all.
So much so I have to advise SWMBO when travelling down narrow roads, to keep on reminding me [between her inane chatter] that I'm towing a caravan. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Russell,
I tow an abbey twin axle (1800KG unladen) I have two gas bottle over the nose plus loadsa other stuff and have no problems at all, I dont even know its there other than a performance reduction although I happily curise at 75/80 mph (maybe )
Not sure why you have a problem, but its not a general vehicle limitation. Duncan

Russel.
Ive towed a twin wheel trailor with 100 pallets on 3ton+ and a
single wheel with argo on 800ml trips regular. the only problem
i've had is remembering i'ts there.
I sugest you try what other members have put forward ie. tyres,
balance weights, nose weight.
Best of luck.

Ditto to everything above - the D3 knocks spots off every other car I have towed with or been a passenger in.
Hope there is something obvious that can be sorted D3 05 SE (old one)
RRS 08 SE (new one)

I often tow our car trailer about. 950 Kgs unladen, a lot more laden - The D3 tows it brilliantly.
Not sure I'd go as far as saying you'd forget its there - performance on the hills when fully laden is somewhat lacking. BUT the way it tows, stops etc is leagues above the previous tow car.

What is the 'nose weight' of a trailer/caravan and what other problems can this cause compared to the total weight?

Nose weight if incorrect will make the front heavy (therefore the back of the car is over-stressed) and make the back of the caravan shake and wiggle - not good, i.e. its not level with the ground.
Essentially with a caravan all the major weight (cooker) for instance is over the axle/s. Any other additional weight (awnings etc) should be placed above the axles, as low down as possible, obviously to keep the centre of gravity as low as possible.
Nose weight is also critical for the car, as certain manufacturers have limited nose weight i.e. less than 100kgs.
I often see people towing with the ass of the caravan in the air and the hitch close to ground and even at low speeds, the caravan is doing a merry dance.
