Hi Simon
sound's like a winner keeping the old girl, I have just finished sorting all those little jobs on my 05 HSE, mechanical and cosmetic and its now perfect, couldn't bring myself to trade it and about 20k for a d4 that will do exactly the same job. Spending a fortune getting every thing working as it should.

Just to round this thread out I had some suspension work done, 4 x new General Grabbers then a laser align and it is like a new car!
It is pin sharp and corners on rails.
All fully serviced and awaiting a change of sump (to plastic with separate filter?) but the bolts are seized and need to be soaked for a few weeks
New trim bits are ordered with a breaker
So, replace the stereo now - any recommendations?
And stop the seat reclining by itself

It is a tough call to decide to change. Having done most jobs already on mine and some jobs for the second time I'll keep it for a while yet. Like Mikey mine has done 260k and I'm thinking 300k will probably be far enough. I could be tempted by a D4 Landmark as the right price. I called in to dealer today to pick up some parts and nearly walked in to the showroom but managed to resist! D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.
D3 2005 HSE, Bonatti Grey, now sold but still comes back for servicing.
Defender 2002 Td5 Commercial, had a hard life but slowly being restored.
I only work so I can afford to repair my Land Rovers!

Out of interest Baz and Mikey,
What makes you think it will be done at 300K?

That's a good question. Having replaced a lot of parts including the engine there is no good reason why it should not run on.
I'm spending around £3k on maintenance and servicing each year doing around 30k. The main driver for me would be reliability as it's my main work car.
The current car has only dropped me twice in 6 years, once for the alternator and once for a conrod through the side of the block!
It's an unfortunate reality that cars don't last for ever although with the right maintenance the D3 should outlast most.
There is also the draw of a nice shiny new D4 before the model disappears. D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.
D3 2005 HSE, Bonatti Grey, now sold but still comes back for servicing.
Defender 2002 Td5 Commercial, had a hard life but slowly being restored.

I have a 08SE D3 and last year I test drove a new D4 HSE, cracking lovely marvellous car, but after the test drive got back into my D3 and thought "Yes it was lovely, but not +£40k lovely"
I have 109k on mine now, most big jobs done over the last couple of years using a forum member to do the work (Woody32), recently put on a Prospeed rack and light guards and thinking to myself there's nothing wrong with her.......so plan is to keep for at least 2 more years (When SWMBO's interest free kitchen is paid for ) and then take a look.....I may be tempted with the new Defender, but all depends if they will be around a sensible price
One other point, I pulled away in a supermarket carpark once without looking and scraped the passenger door on one of their bollards orrible mess, but cleaned it up and the paintwork is now fine, but it has a load of small creases left on the door.....was quoted £300+ to sort out, but what's the point, can't see them from around 5feet away....imagine if I'd done that on a new D4! Good luck with the refurb, have to add that £50k doesn't guarantee a trouble free car, it should do but SWMBO had issues with her delivery miles new car before it left the showroom.
£30k can get you a good reliable looked after car, chk the FS section, admittedly it's mine, it wouldn't be on here if I didn't trust in it. Paul.
