Hi, as Weedyapl says there is no need to dismantle anything to get the ash tray carrier out so that you can remove the spring that has dropped behind. Google LTB00313 which explains how to do it. I did mine today. It's a bit fiddly but quicker than dismantling the dash. I managed to replace the spring. A bit of plastic that holds it had broken but there was enough left to hold the spring as long as it didn't move sideways. I used a piece of double sided carpet tape to stop it moving.

If you want to replace the whole unit then I guess you will have to do some dismantling. Sad

Geoff.

When mine stuck I wimped out and bought the assembly from Land Rover - about £55 from memory - but the ash tray not closing was messing with my OCD Shocked

How the Ashtray works

I'll go look for pictures I MAY have taken, but I'll try and describe it...

Theres a plastic pin on the bottom of the sliding piece. The pin slides in a channel on a moving piece. The channel is such that it accounts for the movement of the tray, and the channel has the ability to rock left and right.

So as the pin slides back, it takes the right path, hits the end, and as the spring pulls the tray forward a little bit, the pin falls into a little catch on the channel. When you push the tray in again, the pin slides back, hits a triangle, and is forced left down the return channel as the tray extends out.

My pin broke so I drilled and super glued in a bit of metal, spent some time filing it down to slide better in the channel, and make sure the depth was right.

Here's a quick MS Paint drawing of how it works if you want to try and replace it too. (I'm going off memory a couple months ago so it probably looks a bit different)

This has happened to mine tonight. How annoying. I kept it shut temporary with a fuel receipt rolled up at the bottom. I'll have a look at it later. Rolling Eyes

If your happy with a push pull there is no need to take out the centre console if its the spring stopping it closing. Just pull the ashtray completely out then pull the holder out all way. Then push the runner down so it pops out and out the way.

Then orientate the spring with a magnetic tip flathead screwdriver so it's horizontal and the tips end is facing you pointing upwards. This takes about 2-3 minutes bit fiddly but once you have done that use nose pliers to grab the end and pull.

It will unravel to about 2-3" then quickly grab that Censored spring with your other hand and yank. I simply refuse to take a centre console/dash apart for a mere bloody spring which i could see will unravel.

How exactly did you get the holder out as mine wont budge...?

Apologies for resurrecting an old post but ........

I have tried and tried and there is no way I can get the carrier out.

It sounds so easy in the LR procedure .....'Using suitable tools, gently press against the ashtray carrier fixing clips and remove the ashtray carrier.(Figure 2)' .......

I must be doing something wrong or being a bit gentle with it! Can anybody help! Thanks.
