If the towbar has been left in for a while they can be very difficult to get out. The keys are quite distinctive with a round orange cap on one end.

Do you know if it's been through the towbar recall check? There were some problems with a couple of them becoming detached whilst towing and Land Rover had a recall.

Mine is an early 09 HSE, I took it into Guy Salmon in Bristol and they condemned the rear crossmember. Had the crossmember replaced and a new fixed towbar fitted free of charge. Perhaps worth checking with a local dealer, they could look up the reg for you and see if it's been done.

Thanks for that tip, just rang a dealer now and the towbar recall is outstanding so will take that in and see what happens.

Nice one! Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up

The check they did whilst I waited.

You may just get the all clear or get given a new towbar. As I needed a new crossmember it was booked in for a couple of days and I had a D4 whilst they did it.

Thanks for that tip, i have it booked in within the next couple of weeks as it hasn't had the work done.

May well get a new towbar myself.

Will the replace it like-for-like? or will they fit a Fixed tow bar?

Thanks again Thumbs Up

Nice car, have been looking at it myself (from afar). Glad to hear its a good one.

The tow bar will most likely be a like for like.

Re Bluetooth, I think the right hand rotary knob after pressing the phone hard button has a selection for searching or pairing? Then just search on your phone for Land Rover, the code is normally 2121 to pair on the older ones (at least all mine have been).

What you get depends on the problem, if they find one. I think most probably get given a new removeable towbar.

With mine they had to cut out and replace the rear crossmember and they then fitted the fixed type. They did discuss that with me when the check was carried out. I didn't mind, it's not as neat but probably better for the heavy trailers I tow occasionally.

I think some in the same circumstances have insisted on having a new removeable towbar supplied.

Speak to the dealer when you take it in.

The fixed one can be removed, it fits into the towbar socket and has bracing arms bolted to the chassis. Once removed you can still use the removeable type.

Hi Chris,

Certainly feel free to drop me a line since your up the road from me if your avatar location is correct!

i did read that post of yours through last week before i picked the car up, and i certainly would love to get started with that level.

Comedyharvey...

she's booked in, they said they will take a look and go from there. if it needs anything doing then they will do it.

Whats the max weight limit difference with the fixed/removable tow bars?

Cheers all Thumbs Up

Jon,

Both rated set 3500kg, not sure about the nose weight limits i.e. the 'downwards' weight the trailer can impose on the tow ball, whether the fixed has a higher rating.

When problems were first coming to light with worn towballs and reported failures there was much discussion on the forum about just what use the removeable towball was designed for. Can't remember the exact words but Land Rover said it was designed for 'occaisional use', well, what did that mean? Once a week, a month, twice a year? Just light trailers or any?

I used the removeable towbar, with heavyish trailers, only twice a month on average and had to have a complete replacement.

See what the dealers says and think about what you are going to tow and how often.
