Changing in pairs, or changing all at the same time.
I understand that it's critical to change tyres in such a way as not to stress differentials, by transmission wind up, as a result of unequal tread depths. As I'm planning on keeping the car until it's done two or three hundred thousand miles (or more?), then transmission care is critical for me.
I've checked with the manual and it says that (ideally) tyres should be changed as a complete set, but it slightly grudgingly said it was possible to change them as matched pairs only. I'm down to 2.2mm at the back and about 3.3mm at the front. I'm wondering if I should let the rears get to 1.6mm and then swap the lot, or if I should get used to front and rear changes being out of phase.
Any thoughts please? Especially from those that have clocked up Intergalactic / Star Ship mileages!2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Swap the front and rear and hopefully have them close to even wear. I haven't heard many occasion of transmission wind up in the D4

Knowing what I know now, I'd have swapped them around 1/2 way through their lives at around 11,000 miles. It's a bit late to get any benefit from it now though.
Having said that, I've got to (shamefully) add that the last time I tried to change an alloy and tyre this size and weight, I struggled I'd do one, not sure I'd volunteer to do all 4 at the same time 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Personally, I don't worry about tread depths being different. Prob run for a fair time with 4 different depths and had no problems, no exploding diffs (front, rear or centre) and gearbox is fine after shade under 150k. Life's too short to worry about these things. Besides the "change complete sets" is in the hope that you'll take the car to your nice friendly stealer and they'll ask you to bend over then they'll relieve you of a good and unnecessary wadge of dosh.
Cynic, moi? You betcha.
